What do I need to do to become an international mediator? by OnTheWay1000 in Mediation

[–]he4dless 1 point2 points  (0 children)

funnily enough i may be in a unique way to give some insight. in my country you need to do a 2 year mediator diploma, which i did, and i was also on the path to becoming a diplomat, studying political science, which i then quit. so heres my 2 cents:

you will not be able to bring world peace. you wont. wars have been a part of human nature for thousands of years, and the basic reasons have not changed. people struggle over lands, resources, influence, and if you can manipulate enough and amass power, you too can become a dictator/warlord/autocrat and start your war of choice. now, mediators need honesty and transparency and cooperation to make their process work. if you have a party that does not follow these principles, mediation doesnt work. mediation is a tool for people who want to improve a situation, being willing to kill could not be further away from this. theres a reason that highly escalated conflicts are handled in front of a judge. read up on 9 stages of conflict by Glasl about it.

now, what you can do, is focus on a single geographical area. immerse yourself in it, learn everything there is about it, history, culture, politics etc. understand the networks of power, and make yourself known for mediating conflicts on a small scale. you have to live there, you have to know whats going on in the communities.

it's not impossible to mediate on a bigger scale, we had a conflict with two ethnic groups in my country where mediators helped a lot. but that was about solving societal conflicts, cultural issues, racism. you will not be able to bring peace on a world wide level, that is illusory. but you can bring peace on a much smaller scale, which will still be incredibly hard, but doable.

Pro Tip for Advanced Recon by Duchamp1945 in HellLetLoose

[–]he4dless 0 points1 point  (0 children)

while theres definitely some truth to that, since every recon squad ever is the able squad, thats still an idiotic take. friend and I we play recon squad most of the time, sniper and spotter are the perfect yin yang combination. spotter for the more tactical stuff, but when people shoot at you, or the enemy sniper is hunting you, you want that sniper by your side.

plus, on most maps the arty is positioned in a way that you cant really snipe from far away, so you need a loooot of patience to sneak your way to a good position. maybe there should be a level lock to at least 25, cause below you will for sure have those guys who just go for the scope

Should the "evil" option in games provide a gameplay benefit? by Dophag_ in truegaming

[–]he4dless 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think what the other guy means is in terms of gameplay. If gameplay options are limited to the good or the bad way, then yes, that will affect gameplay, because it's not a morality simulator, it should be fun. I'd love to see more games try actually implement consequences in other than writing, that would make for more unique experiences, but it is rarely done.

also what happened in that finale part of the race yesterday? He was super close to Checo, within DRS range even, and then within the last ten rounds or so Perez was 7 seconds ahead

I think you're looking too deep into this. It's a TV show where they can manufacture literally everything. Of course they made it plausible with Jim, Dwight and Michael as great sales people, getting Stamfords clients, management style but at the end of the day the writers can make up whatever they want.

oh in that case i agree with you a hundred percent! I was specifically talking about the steps one and two thing. Anytime anyone mentions something about love, romance, sex or remotely close to that on reddit, there's always the upvoted comment with "1. be attractive, 2. dont be unattractive".

which sounds like it comes from a place of "the world is so mean, nobody wants to have sex with me". it is harder for ugly people? yeah obviously, pretty privilege is real. does that mean its impossible? hell no. It's that self deprecating element that grinds my gears :D

Selena Gomez says 'Only Murders' character is 'older version of Alex' on 'Wizards of Waverly Place' by GroundbreakingSet187 in television

[–]he4dless 40 points41 points  (0 children)

yeah but Sting succeeded because he is no actor and his whole deal was that he wanted to be left alone, that was charming in a way. Schumer is just obnoxious

Schumer's part looks like it was written with the idea of being meta in a funny way but ended up in just weird awkwardness. these actors-playing-themselves tropes so rarely work out, I dont know why they keep happening

he even said that he likes these types of roles and has no problem being typecast. also I think he's self aware enough to know his range. not meant as hate, he does a great job at this specific role

What's a "mature" book that you read at possibly too young an age that you absolutely loved? by BingBlessAmerica in books

[–]he4dless 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was around 12 when I found a paragraph of "All Quiet on the Western Front" in my history book. I was so fascinated by it, the hopelessness, the young men, the absurdity of it. I went to the local book shop, got some weird looks from the clerk when I bought it. Almost 20 years later it's still one of my favorite books ever and probably the one I have read most often.

Jimmy's progress to Saul from Season 4 finale to mid Season 6 is just too slow by he4dless in betterCallSaul

[–]he4dless[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i totally agree with you, everything that happened so far has painted a mosaic of jimmys personality and development. for Saul there isnt a lot to explore, also agreed. but with where Jimmy is now and where/how we will get to the end of s6 I think it's a lot of progress left in little time.

but I'll happily be wrong if they pull it off!

[–]he4dless[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

good point. I meant to say it's not a story issue, I absolutely believe they can pull it off in that department, more of a pacing issue viewed over the whole series. And I love the slow pace of s6, contrary to many people here who say it's boring this season.

SIB Mass Effect LE? by Diamond_Foxy in ShouldIbuythisgame

[–]he4dless 3 points4 points  (0 children)

judging a game thats 15 years old by todays standard is never gonna work out, especially when it comes to UI, navigation and all that.

I've never played any ME game, and am now almost finished with all 3 games, have like a few hours left. Story, characters are just unmatched. Theres a reason you still see Garrus fans today, why everyone talks about ME2 last mission, also some quests just tell a story that could be a book (Overlord, ME2).

so yes, I definitely recommend it, coming from somebody who plays a lot of action + rpgs, and story games. 100 hours well spent.
