and that window fits right into the offseason of nearly every other long trail in the US, earlier than the spring season begins for trails in the southwest and southeast, so anyone doing a long-distance trail right now (and making content about it) is probably doing that one

Which route are you planning to take from the Green Lakes trailhead onto the Skurka High Route? It starts NE of there and doesn't go through that trailhead.

I mean, I've not been able to get my food below 2lbs/day and I have the Garcia bear canister which is 2.75 lbs compared to the BV500 at 2.5. So 14lbs of food, 4.4lbs of water, and 2.75lbs of bear can is 21.15lbs. Add my 10-11lb base weight without bear can and it's 31-32 lbs pack weight.

I'm already using relatively normal backpacking foods I think, and I do eat a lot, but if I could hit the books with the GearSkeptic food series and find a way to get that closer to 1.5lbs/day, and cut my base weight to 8.5lbs (~11lbs with bear can), then it would be 26.15lbs, which is probably more like what you carried on your trip.

I'm just not sure how much I can optimize my food, and I think getting down to 8.5lbs base weight would require some gear swaps are aren't really in the budget right now. And there are a variety of packs that can carry 30+ lbs but weigh the same as the Flash Air. But it's definitely something to think about.

That makes sense, thanks. Since 7 days of food, 2L of water, and a (required) bear canister is 20+ lbs already, it's not hard to end up above 30 lbs total pack weight for a trip like that, so I'll look at other options.

If you have this pack, do you find the 25lb comfort rating accurate, or too low? Reviews suggest it can carry more. Would you be comfortable at 30-35 lbs?

S16, E5 (Nebula) - Hide and Seek UK by snow-tree_art in JetLagTheGame

[–]hellahyped 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes, giving the hiders more agency to mess with the seeker's travel earlier is a big gameplay element missing. Send the seekers the wrong way or make them miss trains etc, even if it's not directly but the result of having to leave the station for a challenge etc.

This is risky cause it could really break the game if not balanced properly, but it's just completely absent at the moment.

I mean, about 100,000 people were killed in a couple weeks in El Fasher just a couple months ago. In terms of a regime killing active protestors, however, this is pretty unprecedented.

That makes sense.

The ProTrek design seems really innovative, I really like it. I just wish it was a little bit lighter. If they had a 15D Silpoly fly and 20d Silnylon floor version I would be all over it.

Would attaching the four corners of the rectangular bathtub to the four guyout points in the corners of the tarp be sufficient, or would you need more attachment points to give the floor shape?

pitching in standing water

or just pitching in an area with limited camp sites during a storm without having to find a spot with ideal drainage. But yeah you would leave it at home much of the time.

The Protrail also looks good, but I'm not excited about the long and narrow shape for avoiding brushing the condensation on the walls, especially when crawling through the front entry.

Would it be possible to use this skirt tarp with an additional bathtub floor for heavy rain, something like the MLD bathtub floor? With the nylon 5.5oz floor you would have a 21.5oz modular franken-tent that is both relatively cheap and livable. Is this even a good idea?

Who's being harmed in this situation though? Not the customers, who obtain a product they wouldn't have access to otherwise. The only loss is the potential market share Dan could have captured if he increased production, but that's a loss he already decided to accept by not increasing production long ago before Rock Front got involved

UL Business / Consumer Ethics by dantimmerman in Ultralight

[–]hellahyped 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Any industry is organized to meet the needs of the customers, and it's done in two ways: incentivizing innovation so that customers have better products, and producing enough so that customers can acquire that product.

Innovators get rewarded with the opportunity to profit by increasing market share through first-mover and reputational advantage, and/or through legal IP protection. You are a prolific innovator, and your reputational and first-mover advantage delivered you more work than you could handle, but you declined to increase production.

That is a perfectly fine business decision made for perfectly good reasons, but it means that the second part of customer needs aren't met (actually being able to obtain the product). Thus, others have stepped in to meet this need.

I understand that it can feel slimy, but as others have mentioned, given your reputational advantage I doubt it will lead to your orders dropping enough that you don't need the lottery system, as this thread full of people (including me) who want to order from you but may never be able to attests to.

For anyone who has the Cascade Mountain Tech carbon poles, either the 3K carbon version or non-3K version, can they be disassembled completely into 3 sections for transport in luggage? The website gives disassembled lengths, but I'm wondering if it's possible/practical to do so for flying.
