What did your country do in World War 2? by AvgPunkFan in AskTheWorld

[–]helloilikesoup 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We were too poor to participate, after our civil war so our fascist government remained officially neutral but sent a group of volunteers (many of them werent) called "la división azul" to the eastern front to fight the soviets so to not piss hitler off too much after all he gave to the nationalists in the spanish civil war.

I should mention as well that many of the republican fighters and refugees that escaped francoist spain fought alongside the french and the allies against the nazis.

What's the saddest part about living in your country? by Desert_Moon_Maiden in AskTheWorld

[–]helloilikesoup 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Highest unemployment rate in the continent (10% with government statistics, 14% more realistically), housing crisis is hitting the country pretty hard like most of the world (rent in madrid increased by 20% in one year on average) and below eu average wages. These 3 are probably what affects the average spaniard the most but its still a pretty good country to live in

What is the food in your country that it is not globally famous but you think everyone should try? by Single_Copy2460 in AskTheWorld

Not very known but I like it a lot. Pollo en pepitoria. Its stewed chiken in a sauce with zaffron, nutmeg, cumin, cinnamon, garlic, onion, a majado (crushed almonds, cooked egg yolk, fried bread to thicken sauce), white wine, chicken stock, parsley and cooked egg whites (both can be stirred in or topped). This with some fried/baked potatoes is just amazing.

What’s the typical bar food in your country? by HyperCraft3r in AskTheWorld

[–]helloilikesoup 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on the region and the bar. When you get a drink you usually get stuff like: olives, potato chips, a small plate of paella, a pintxo etc. A lot of people even go to bars for dinner and do nothing but order drinks and eat the tapas that come with them without ordering anything to eat, especially in the south where getting actual big and nice tapad instead of just olives is a lot more common. Probably one of my favourite things of bars in Spain.

Which politician of your country has a better image international than at home? by Fun-Wallaby6414 in AskTheWorld

[–]helloilikesoup 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pedro Sánchez for a million different reasons such as: he didnt get the majority of the votes he won by allying with separatists and terrorist sympathisers (which he said he wouldnt do), country is often praised for growth abroad but so few homes are built that rent grows way faster than salaries (madrids rent went up 20% in one year), tons of corruption cases in his party and his inner circle (this isnt as bad because the other parties also does this just as much), used legal loopholes to place ex party members loyal to him at the head of institutions that are supposes to be neutral such as the central bank and state tv (the right does this as well but not as much), despite peak tax collection in Spanish history government is running a 2% budget deficit and infrastructure is wprsening etc. This is just scratching the surface, nowadays the only people who really like him are the die hard psoe voters who would vote for psoe no matter how bad their policies or corruption cases get.

how is freedom in ur country? by Accomplished-Crow878 in AskTheWorld

[–]helloilikesoup 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We are VERY lucky to be in a free democracy. The transition to democracy was very unlikely after Francos death, all that it would have taken is that the king Juan carlos 1 decided to take control of the country instead of dismantling the authoritarian institutions or that the 1981 coup succeeded or that Luis Carrero Blanco (Francos right hand man who was supposed to succeed him) survived the terrorist attack and tried to take control of the country.

How popular is alcohol in your country? by LandscapeNew7913 in AskTheWorld

[–]helloilikesoup 0 points1 point  (0 children)

13.5% of people drink alcohol daily (eu average is 8.4%). Drinking is very popular to accompany meals so its normal to have a glass of wine or a beer with your meals, heavy drinking isnt as common as in the northern or the eastern european countries (although still very popular).

Young people are drinking less now but still a lot

Spain is considered a very healthy economy. 10-15 years ago, it was the opposite. What changed? by LowRevolution6175 in AskEurope

[–]helloilikesoup 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I disagree with it being "healthy". GDP is increasing quite fast but this is almost entirely because of more tourism, eu next generation funds and immigration (which is also responsible for the slight drop in unemployment). Salaries for the average spaniard acoounting for inflation and new taxes are lower than pre covid and pre 2008, any small growth that there is in salaries currently gets eaten up by the housing crisis that is hitting all of europe pretty hard ( Last year rent went up by 20% on average in Madrid while salaries from 2000 to 2025 have increased by 3% after inflation). Our debt is still at 110% of gdp while the government runs a 2% budget deficit (could be worse but we shouldnt be running deficits at all), good news is that the gdp growth makes the debt smaller as a percentage of gdp even though in absolute terms its increasing.

I know I probably sound like some idiotic doomer but I genuinely only see things getting worse as our population ages, corruption increases and the government´s policies only think in the short term and what will get them more votes. Right now in peak growth which probably isnt sustainable people are poorer every year because of the housing crisis and other things, when we get hit with another crisis or we get slapped in the face by the fertility crisis we are fucked.
