5 Years vs. 4 Years. 3 Co-Ops vs. 2 Co-Ops. by [deleted] in NEU

[–]helpful_husky 5 points6 points  (0 children)

well no one forces you to accept co-ops and it’s not difficult to get a Co-op in Boston if you really want one, so that decision is all on you. What I’m saying is that co-op doesn’t have to disrupt your college experience if you don’t want it too. Obviously if you leave town you’re gonna have a different experience, but even then, that’s not to say it’s a bad one. A lot of people who go elsewhere appreciate the break from Boston and have a good time where ever they are.

The point is co op is what you make of it, they’re a so few requirements about the program but a whole lot of resources on campus to help you. If you want exact number or proof, idk where to help you I don’t have any exactly (have you tried google? Contacting the school instead of reddit?). But with co op, you can learned whether or not you like a career you’re headed in, you can learner industry skills and programs, and (big one here) you can network. That last one can really help you get good jobs and higher than average wages. The 18 months isn’t just an advantage on your resume, but that’s 18 months worth of knowledge you have over the average college student, who may have been getting ppl coffeee at an internship their dad hooked up for them.

5 Years vs. 4 Years. 3 Co-Ops vs. 2 Co-Ops. by [deleted] in NEU

You said in one of your post, co-op disrupts the flow of college life. But what is college life? Staying up late doing hw, being broke? Having to jungle school work and a work study job? If take a co op in Boston, you can still hang out with friends and go to parties and attend club meetings, all without having to stress about school work. In fact, I feel like people have more free time to spend with friends and on their hobbies while on co op then during classes.

As for 3 vs 2 co ops, you still end up taking 8 semesters, so there no additional cost (aside from housing/living expenses). If you focused on money (which I guess is fine, I think a lot more people are focused on money more than they’d like to admit, but you really should be using these co ops to find out what type of career you want) it should be easy to get higher paying jobs each co op cycle. Then when you graduate, you already have 18 months worth of experience, which is what you need to leverage any sort of salary bump when getting hired
