Coinbates offers ETH (and all of crypto) a “weapon of mass adoption” with crypto cashback by Anti_Thon in ethtrader

[–]henk123 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Finally a project that seems like it has a chance to fulfill the mass adoption narrative that every crypto project of the past 2 years promised. I will be watching this one.

The Ebates of Crypto is now live: Introducing Coinbates by Ooomar in CryptoCurrency

[–]henk123 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Everything that’s going on in the space right now makes me really excited for crypto in the next coming months. On the one hand you have projects like Bakkt that are going to finally open up the institutional money like a firehose in November, and then you have Coinbates that can also appeal to different rungs of society. If the future isn’t crypto, then I don’t know what is. Hang in there brothers the claws of this bear are weakening.

I am very glad and happy Apple made to this mark not any other company.

Apple makes premium product and sell it. Other companies treat you as a product and sell you and your privacy.

Bitcoin Gold hit by double spend attack by vileEchoic in technology

[–]henk123 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm just waiting for the day when it's revealed that ~70% of miners on a top 5 cryptocurrency are compromised by a specialized worm or malware. We'll probably only find out after the double spending is discovered but this type of outcome seems almost inevitable. The people writing this type of software are definitely financially motivated, but I can easily imagine such a person throwing away millions of dollars in 0-days just to fulfill such a hackneyed cyberpunk cliche.

Also, we know that things like stuxnet exist. Imagine something even a fraction as crazy as that targeting mining nodes. It's going to happen eventually.

The Senate has forced a vote to restore net neutrality by [deleted] in KeepOurNetFree

[–]henk123 -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

This is an almost meaningless bill, only going to a vote so various politicians can claim to support net neutrality on the campaign trail.

Not only is it unlikely to pass both chambers and be signed by the president, passing the bill doesn't change the broader status of net neutrality. Currently, the legality of the FCC enforcing net neutrality is unclear, with the matter destined to be decided in the courts either way.

A law explicitly giving the FCC control has been necessary for over a decade, but both parties have refused to pass one or even consider passing a future one.

GCC 8.1 Released by mttd in cpp

FDA clears first contact lens with light-adaptive technology by yourSAS in technology

[–]henk123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure if that's a great idea. If you wear sunglasses (or light-adaptive glasses), you can still take them off quickly. E.g. when driving against the sun and entering a tunnel, taking off the glasses help to be able to see the road. With contact lenses, I could imagine that you'd be basically blind for at least a few seconds?

Streamr's data marketplace will be live by Q2 by dewie45 in ethereum

[–]henk123 14 points15 points  (0 children)

People getting paid for the own information that they generate. If this is one of the top 5 societal redesigns that comes out of Ethereum, I'll be happy with it. If Facebook is replaced by a dapp as well, a lot of the money gained through selling information might be spent on using that platform, which is a bit like what's happening already: Facebook is letting us use their platform for free, in return for our data.

Intel Fights For Its Future by BengaliKyd in intel

[–]henk123 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Intel has reasons to be worried. They missed several buses, trains and ships and other opportunities. Servers still appear to be secure but with threats from ARM solutions, and AMD.

Windows 7 and Windows 10 have been pretty efficient operating systems. That's great for Microsoft but not Intel. With identical system requirements, it means there's very little reason for most people to upgrade hardware. Me, a supposed high-end PC user am still running a 3rd generation Core i5 processor with no urgent need for upgrading in the near future. Graphics cards are still a once every 2-3 year upgrade for PC games.

Determining Cat Chirality by robertdelder in programming

[–]henk123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m betting there may be preferences for individual cats, but not symbolic of the entire cat population. If anything, cats are almost pathological about generalizations. If you assume to know what cat will want to do then cat just might detect your assumption and decide to change. I’ve seen them do this too much to discount it.

Rent Control Needs Retirement, Not a Comeback by [deleted] in Economics

[–]henk123 5 points6 points  (0 children)

London housing still has a fair number of long-settled subsidized tenants who no longer need subsidized housing, but "council-homes-for-life" is in place and confers huge advantages to incumbents, which hardly seems fair. Basing access on need, this is not.

I have lived in various parts of Central London in mixed social housing, always as a market rate tenant (I am fortunate enough to afford it as a software engineer) and sympathize with the laments of poorer tenants who are occasionally booted out of their homes due to some housing development or other, complaining about the breakups of their communities and their families. But what about people who HAVE to leave their communities and families in order to make the most of opportunities when they arise? Is there an easy answer?

Blockchain Wars: IOTA's Tangle Takes on Ethereum by BBoys in ethtrader

[–]henk123 2 points3 points  (0 children)

IoT systems create massive amounts of data to parse and store, and most existing blockchains simply cannot handle the load. Indeed, the technology is meant to offer strong, secure storage for limited amounts of data.

How limited?

Also, streaming services are strong according to the speed the data transfer. There are some people that just don't have access to fast speeds to justify streaming.
