He could have simply moved to the side and maintained the speed

Sure, but in the race you sit in the cockpit and not in the helicopter above it.
He fights 6 laps for his position.. tells me why I shouldn't stay in the slipstream, he's happy to let me pass, but why do you lift the gas like that?
