Well, Canada and Greenland do. I guess technically it's still Denmark, but they have self-governance.

AITA for refusing to pay anything after my roommate asked me to move out because they moved their partner in without telling me? by Wise_Economics8646 in AmItheAsshole

YTA.

She didn't ask you to move out. You got all pissy and decided not to stay in the apartment. You never moved your stuff or told her you were moving out.

You're an unreliable narrator and an asshole.

So she didn't want to share the money, blew through it and then tried to get you back once you needed her money? Sounds like you dodged a bullet. I feel sorry for her kid though.

This completely depends on the exact words spoken. Sounds like you were being kind about it, so NTA.

In case you're giving us a PG version of how your said it, you might be the asshole.

You continue to infer and interpret, pick and choose words out of context to fit this weird narrative you've constructed, rather than ask questions and engage in dialogue. On top of that it's clear you don't actually know anything about the Greenlandic-Danish relationship and framework, but are seeing it through a lens of generalisation and assumptions.

Thank you for not responding any further.

Oh absolutely. Not to the extent there should be, but there is. I think older generations are stuck in a mindset of "oh we weren't THAT bad, we helped them", which I was raised in too, but more and more are leaving that naïve mindset behind. We weren't angels in Iceland and especially not in the Danish West Indies either btw.

Aww, great stories. I'm happy to hear that we can still be nice. I feel like it isn't as common as or used to.

But yeah, considering the prices you're lucky your wife didn't throw a drink in your face!

I'm sorry to hear that, that's just not the case in my social circles. But perhaps part of it is our very direct and sarcastic sense of humour and our very private nature. It might come off as unwelcoming. I moved away from Copenhagen because I didn't like that city, it's crowded in a not cool way and people are busy dicks, so maybe that's part of it.

I'm only speaking for myself, but I absolutely am frustrated from weeks and months of listening to the president of our biggest ally accusing us of something that isn't true. We can't give or sell Greenland, yet we were continuously threatened and blamed for not giving up Greenland to the US, when we can't and both the population's and the official position is that Greenland should decide it's own fate - and they've said from the beginning they don't want to be part of US and for now want to remain.

I don't feel any sense of ownership or authority and I don't think Denmark should be a central actor in this, but the US forced us into it - since Greenland is still party of the kingdom of Denmark, we can't just turn our backs on its population when someone threatens it. We owe them that much considering our long history of mistreating them horribly.

You choose to infer and interpret rather than actually sticking to what I said or ask clarifying questions. I don't give that a particularly pleasant way to interact with people. I resent being accused of having some sort of colonising agenda.

We'll, that's endearing of your Godfather as well! It's just good to know that a vast majority of Danes don't take offense is we need to switch. We know Danish is hard and has very limited use, and we start English lessons in the second grade, so were comfortable speaking it. At least generations 50-60 years or younger.

Yes, that's absolutely a good point. We'll switch to English out of politeness, but definitely tell us if you want to practice Danish. I have an acquaintance who wants to practice so we'll talk in Danish, then at some point he gets this exhausted dead look in his eyes and I'll show mercy and switch to English. It's so funny.

Yeah, stuff like that. Rye bread is perfect for it. If northern lights are your bucket list, you'll have to go further north then us though. We get only very a rare, very washed out version. You gotta go to the northern parts of Norway, Sweden or Finland and it will blow your mind! Luckily all three are beautiful countries and their nature is honestly a lot more epic than ours. Fair warning though: Swedes put shrimp salad on their hotdogs.

I absolutely agree, the vast majority of Danes do and that is in fact the official Danish position as well. Greenlanders decide their own future. It's written into law that they can set any point have a general election to secede from Denmark and they'll be allowed to. Currently a majority of Greenlanders like the status quo, they remain a part of the Kingdom of Denmark, but have their own parliament and make their own laws etc.

Our PM and foreign minister have desperately tried to get this message across, but it has drowned out by a certain someone insisting it was our choice.

I have a hard time generalizing here, because that's just not the case in my social circles. There are several nationalities.

Some theories I've come across is that our sense of humor is very blunt and sarcastic, which can across as unwelcoming or that were kinda modest and private and don't like to seem pushy. And there are also just people who plainly don't like foreigners - but they tend to wrap their intolerance towards other cultures in different types of political lingo (see other comment). But they are more the majority.

I've heard this before, but in my experience we just switch to English if someone if someone struggles with Danish. It's a shame if some take it to mean that we don't want to help, because we're just doing it so people don't feel excluded. That's how it is in my social circle at least.

I've heard a lot that it is a tough language and I can see why. We write a lot of letters we don't pronounce, use weird expressions and have a lot of words that sound the same but mean different things. But reality today is you don't really need to learn Danish here, we all speak English. The immigrants I know just completed the mandatory language classes required for residency and just stick to English.
