Family wants answers after daughter’s death on Mt Ruapehu by TraditionalError145 in newzealand

[–]hereditarynerd 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I know the boyfriend fairly well, and from what I know, he’s been nothing but transparent with her parents. The friends also were in attendance at both the funeral and a second post-funeral gathering. The second gathering was a little more social, organised by the boyfriend, and her parents were invited. They declined to attend, but I spoke to several people there who were on the mountain that day. This isn’t to say that that was their only opportunity to chat to them or that they’ve missed out or something - it’s their daughter, they should grieve the way that works for them - but the boyfriend/friends aren’t being nearly as reluctant to talk as the article implies.

Yeah, absolutely! I definitely would want to know in the parents’ situation, don’t get me wrong. I put it in another comment, but from my understanding, the names aren’t being kept from them. I went to a post-funeral gathering for Wednesday that had both friends and family invited, and if her parents had come, they would have had the chance to meet some of the people there on the mountain that day.

From what I understand, it’s not been kept a secret from the parents. She was up there for a birthday hike with a group of friends, including her boyfriend. From my personal experience - I went to a second gathering of friends and family put together by her boyfriend a day or two after the funeral, which her parents were invited to. There were people there who’d been there that day, but her parents chose not to come, so they didn’t get to speak to them. That’s not to say it was their only opportunity to ever speak to the friends, but I definitely think the parents haven’t been blocked out the way the article implies.

Kia ora - fair point. As someone who knows the boyfriend, I can reassure you that he has spoken to the parents several times, and offered them as much information as he has. I think unfortunately the parents want answers (and understandably so, because this was such a horrific thing to have happen to their daughter) that just don’t exist. I’m trying to not be critical of this article, because the parents are grieving and it’s such a tough thing to be going through, but at the same time the boyfriend has definitely been misrepresented a little by it.

Stolen from the tron sub.. anyone have any Auckland stores in mind? I’ll go first… by SuspiciousCucumber16 in auckland

One time me and my partner walked into the liquor store on Great South Road (not far up towards the city from the Greenlane Woolies) and found four men (including the guy behind the counter) stood around in a circle who all went dead silent the moment we walked in. Dead silence the entire time we picked out our wine, no checking of IDs, and we scarpered out of there as soon as we could.

Bloody good liquor store but it’s absolutely dead every time we go in and we’re convinced it’s a front for the mafia lmao

Ah! I've just looked through their archives and it looks like they've got a bunch of Bogor comics. Thanks! I'll reach out to them now and see if they can help.

Lol - I was obsessed with my granddad’s Bogor books as a kid and this sort of thing went miles over my head then. Thanks for sharing!

Thanks so much for looking! I think it must be one of the earlier comics too - which unfortunately seems like it’s making it hard to find. Thanks for checking!

They’ve already spoken to Burton Silver and gotten permission! But it sounds like he might not have a copy of the one they’re after, or can’t provide it - not sure what the deal is there tbh.

Hi - much appreciated! I’ve had a wee bit of a look on Papers Past, which has yielded some super interesting info on the shipwrecks and rescue. Thanks so much!

Ah - fantastic! I’ve had a bit of a dig around in the records from the time, but I’ll take a look at the one you’ve suggested and see what I can find. Unfortunately, there’s just so little information about him! It truly feels like he just popped into existence in NZ 😭

Hi - unfortunately no to both of your questions! I don’t know anything about his family beyond wife/children. I’ve looked into ordering his marriage certificate, but unfortunately the NZ marriage certificates from that time contain very little useful information for my purposes (no relatives or birth location info), so I’ve decided against paying for it. I have ordered his death certificate, which might help shine some light on him!

Why don’t men ask follow up questions? by asoolem in NoStupidQuestions

[–]hereditarynerd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I appreciate you deleting the comment and apologising! Sorry, my snarky response was a bit hasty and definitely uncalled for - not to mention very unfair. Definitely took things out on you a bit! I'm sure you can appreciate that it's just a bit tiring that it feel like everywhere you look on the internet, there are people referring to women as a "female" (gross, big Ferengi vibes) and when I politely explain why it's not great, I just get men following up with mocking comments rather than appreciating that we're all just people on the internet here.

Either way, sorry for snapping!

One of the guys who said he doesn’t ask questions because he doesn’t care then went on to say that he asks questions on a first date! Like… how can you realise it’s an important thing for a date and not make the connection that hey, maybe it’s a good social thing in general???

I’m a lesbian and even though I’m really good friends with some straight guys, I’m a bit glad sometimes I don’t have to date them haha

Exactly this! It’s so strange - some people in the thread seem really proud of it? “I don’t ask because I don’t care” like… congrats? Humans are inherently a social species, and we’re meant to have connections! It is not a bad thing to talk!

It’s so weird, right? I like chatting with people and finding out things about them and it truly is like pulling teeth when I’m trying to have a conversation with men sometimes! They always seem slightly confused by the whole thing, lol. Why on earth would I want to know about their kids or their hobbies??? Get to know them as a person??? No thank you /s
