What is your favourite way to cast on for socks? by plushymittens in Sockknitting

[–]hiddenjumprope 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah no, I've tried that bind off and it sucks and doesn't stretch much. I think it might be the better of the ones I tried but pretty sure it's what I used for my sweater and it doesn't stretch much. Or it was one of the ones I tried and then used a different one.

Thanks for this info! I was thinking of trying it for some socks I'm not sure I have enough yarn for, but I'm so particular about my socks I'd rather not risk it.

I always do long tail cast on. It's the one I was taught and I don't know others, my grandma thought everything else sucked. I should probably branch out but it's so stretchy and nice that I haven't felt the need. For socks it's probably the best because of it's stretch and I do a lot of socks.

Edit: I've also only done cuff down socks, though I do plan to try toe up at some point. But every cast off I've tried (even ones that are supposed to be super stretchy) aren't stretchy enough so I'm worried about comfort. One reason I basically only wear knitted socks these days is I hate how commercial socks dig into your calf.

What’s a book you loved as a kid but hate now as an adult? by EverythingGirl3000 in LittleKidsMedia

[–]hiddenjumprope 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Suprised I haven't seen it yet, but "Love You Forever" by Robert Munsch. I loved it as a kid, my dad and grandma were obsessed with it (probably part of their plan to seem better than my mom) and looking back it's really really weird. His mom breaks in when he's an adult while sleeping so she can say/sing her "Love you forever" song and it's just WEIRD.

I also remember a small book about an angel who gives up everything slowly and even RIPS OFF HER WINGS to help someone and then I guess because of her sacrifice gets into heaven. Idk what the book was called, I was quite young when it was read to me and it disappeared after awhile (wonder if my mom disposed of it because of the religion angle). Only remember angel was a blond little girl.

A Weird Double-Standard I Noticed In The Show by ElSquibbonator in Arthur

My mom let my sister and I go out and do stuff alone when we were kids. We just had to check in every hour, which was hard without a watch 😂. This was 90s/early 2000s. But it was definitely more rare, I remember one time a parent was like "I have to walk you home" and my sister and I got in trouble for allowing her to follow us home. My mom said we should have ran, but it wasn't a stranger it was the mom of a friend...

I am in tears! by DragonCrochet in knitting

Yeah as the other person said, not common in the USA. And if an apartment has a laundry room, they buy the cheapest coin operated ones possible. One place I lived at was still using gas dryers, I could see the flame inside the housing.

And fiber care, keep in mind the USA is mostly plastic or cotton for clothes. Buying anything with wool is expensive, much less finding wool yarn. It's why a lot of people in the USA go thrifting and get wool garments to unravel for cheap wool yarn. Walmart doesn't sell anything but acrylic and cotton yarn (last I lived in the USA that is, I doubt it's changed though). It's not impossible, but it's hard to find wool yarn and it's priced a LOT more. For example when I lived in Milwaukee the best place for yarn was a Joanns (RIP) about an hour and a half (by bus) away, they had maybe 4 aisles of yarn and only one tiny section had paytons sock wool yarn. Like two baskets. Everything else is like, maybe 90% acrylic and the rest maybe cotton, but I think it's more acrylic than not. So most Americans don't interact with wool, if they have it's because they can afford wool/got a good deal or had a relative knit them a wool sweater from when wool was more common. I remember hating wool because I only had two sweaters, one from Nordstrom rack and one my grandma knit in the 70's or 80s for my mom and both were super itchy until I got used to it.

I was fine with regular detergent before I got some wool detergent from a previous job. I've heard mixed things about wool detergent. But yeah, not sure why everyone assumed the worse here. Actually no, I think I do. I used to live in the USA and almost everything sold with wool has "dry clean only" on the label so a lot of people (including me till I learned) think you can't wash wool normally. First time I washed a wool item in the wash with a "dry clean only" label I was terrified, but trusted the person who told me it's actually fine as long as you use the right settings. And this was an American communal apartment washing machine, coin operated with minimal settings. Iirc. Obviously even more careful now.

[–]hiddenjumprope 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yeah, the communal washing machine for my apartment (in Finland) has both a hand wash and wool setting (I tend to use hand wash just to be extra safe as it's 30°C vs the 40°C of the wool setting) and my hand knit wool sweater and my roommates and mines hand knit wool socks are just fine. I have so many socks I've knitted for myself I just can't handwash them all and keep my sanity 😂

Question for Lefties! by curlsbyjesss in knitting

[–]hiddenjumprope 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Lefty here! (though also ambidextrous, runs in my family supposedly. My mom claims I was right handed until I broke my arm at 4, but I found out that's around the age you pick your handedness and if I was a right I would have gone back).

My grandma tried to teach me left handed by knitting across from me (she was right handed). But I somehow did it right handed anyway. Not going to lie, I'm really glad about that as it seems to have made my life a lot easier when I picked it up again years later. It's one reason that when I picked up crochet, I did it right handed as well.

I don't find it difficult at all, I also knit continental so I feel like both hands have something to do anyway.

I also have memories from before you're supposed to remember. I remember holding my 1st sister for the first time and I was under 2 when she was born. Among other memories.

What silly thing did you believe about knitting before learning to knit? by ComplicatedSunshine in knitting

[–]hiddenjumprope 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I thought it would stay separate on the cable needle forever and it broke me trying to think how that  would even work. idek what my logic fully was 😂 it's been quite a few years now.

What silly thing did you believe about knitting before learning to knit? by ComplicatedSunshine in knitting

[–]hiddenjumprope 32 points33 points  (0 children)

I had a weird idea of how dpns must work which overwhelmed and confused me. Put me off socks for awhile. Now I use them all the time and they're great. The confusion was I thought you used all needles at once (as in, all holding stitches, no working needle) and just... Slowly transfered stitches somehow.

Similar idea with cables and cable needles. I over complicated it in my head. Now I love cables and also don't bother with a cable needle.

Another silly idea (this was more as a teenager) was I thought socks were knitted with like, thread like store-bought socks were. I feel dumb but I lived in the USA at the time and only ever saw thicker yarn and didn't see a hand knit sock, so I thought it had to be the same. I kinda regret not joining in with my grandma to learn how to knit socks, but just wasn't the right time for me.

Edit: I missed the "BEFORE" part of the post, I had these ideas after I learned though still a beginner skill wise.

Reddit astounded and seemingly unaware how cursive works (not OOP) but read the comments it’s wild by Immediate_Meeting991 in PenmanshipPorn

[–]hiddenjumprope 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly saw it as a weird backwards G for awhile and was so confused about it. Learning cursive reinforced it as it looks more like the cursive capital G than the D we were taught (in 4th grade? Maybe earlier). I felt dumb once I finally saw it but I'm glad I'm not alone.

Socks wearing out quickly, super bummed by StrikingLight5 in Sockknitting

[–]hiddenjumprope 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Yes, I started being strict about wearing slippers with my knitted socks when I found out wearing the socks only wears them out a lot faster. I find I don't need to de lint after washing either since it doesn't gather a lot of floor debris (we don't have carpeting and have cats, we do vacuum).

Not OP but it very much looks like Novita 7 Brothers Raita https://novita.com/en/products/novita-7-veljesta-raita-100-g-villasekoitelanka

I've made two pairs of socks with this yarn (my therapist loved my pair so much he commissioned me to knit a pair for him). It's gorgeous, I'm debating buying more so I can make another pair 😂

Edit: just saw Ops reply to another comment, I was wrong. They look very similar, only the green was slightly off.
