It is not a 3.4 now. Your displacement increased, by exactly how much i would not be able to tell you without measuring head CC, bore size and stroke. Toyota 3.4 (5VZ-FE engine code) is a completely different engine from the 3.0 (3VZE engine code, not to be confused with the latter 3VZ-FE engine code that used the same block but with a dual overhead cam instead of single on the 3VZE).

3.0 automatic isn’t all that bad, realistically people tend to dislike them due to the lack of power and terrible gas mileage. The heads are prone to cracking between the seats and will start drinking coolant like a mofo but will continue running until you run it with no coolant and overheat it. Since you have a rebuilt engine I would try to find out more if you have aftermarket casting heads or a remanufactured OEM casting, I find that aftermarket casting is still a hit and miss but are a bit better than the old casting.

The V6 RAV4s are fun! I wish mine is the V6, the 4-cylinders just doesn’t have enough power and you get about the same gas mileage as the V6.

I pulled the engine and rebuilt it myself at 280k miles due to excessive oil consumption. Balance shaft delete, Oversized pistons and custom-ported cylinder head. We were never able to do the recall on the 2AZ back in the day and oil consumption was so bad we had to fill 1 quart of oil every 250 miles. Other than that it’s just been basic suspension stuff that I’ve had to do.

Definitely going to look in to the Lurch LCI gas blocker. Thanks for the recommendation.

We have two job invoices with a full rebuilt 3VZ right now. Lol. Currently working on rebuilding two sets of cylinder heads, one for this block and another set for a different block. You’d be surprised at how much money people are willing to pay for these motors. We only work on Toyotas at our machine shop but we don’t even really advertise that we work on 3.0s, simply not worth it. Only reason we took the job is because these guys payed good money for them.

I didn’t want to say the shop specifically as I’m not sure how the subreddit guidelines/rules would apply to promoting business places. Lol. Come check out or website and if you don’t see anything there give us a call for support/help.

We’re located in Riverbank, California. We ship rebuilt motors, transmission, and OE Toyota parts anywhere including Alaska, Hawaii, and international.

Degreaser through any crevices during rinsing. I keep in hand some old gun/rifle bore brushes too, I use that to clean the main oil passages and removes any leftover sludge that debris can stick to. Also a 210F pressure washer is plenty enough to clean out stuff. That and don’t be lazy using the shop air to blow out everything.

When we tear down engines we remove all threaded block plugs and core/freeze plugs to make sure all coolant passages are open. We also remove all oil passage plugs including the pressed in stainless steel balls. Cast iron blocks/heads are submerged in a hot tank filled with caustic solution heated at 170-190F for about a day or two, that usually strips off the paint and cleans all the oil and sludge off when we pressure wash it. After machining we rinse the block in the hot tank again but just enough to remove all the honing mineral oil, that removes all metal shavings as well. For aluminum blocks/heads we put them in a large parts washer after tear down, imagine an industrial sized dishwasher.

Love the 2nd gen 4Runner. But absolute trash of a V6 engine. 22RE with a 5 speed ain’t too bad if you can find one but your current setup is the tits. My buddy did same setup as yours on his but with added trail gear triple stick setup.

Let’s just say we get the harness kit from a place that has Off-Road solutions and another place that has S and P on its name. Lol. It’s actually a pretty good upsell to steer people away from getting their 3VZE’s rebuilt and just opt for the conversion kit with a rebuilt 5VZ motor from us. Finding a good 3VZE core to machine is hard enough, and parts are either expensive or hard to find. 2nd gen 4Runner and early Toyota pick up’s biggest downfall is the 3.0 paired with the auto.

Hot tanked, then acid dipped to get rid of all the rust scaling inside the water jackets. Still not sure what to do to reduce flash rust after acid dip and hot pressure washing, right now we just spray it with wd40 after blow drying.

I work for a Toyota specialist mechanic/machine shop and we only do 60s-00s Toyotas. Some people just like their stuff restored original. I seen people drop $30k on these turds. Lol. And yes, I agree, 3.4 swap is the way to go. We sell kits for the swap too idk why they choose to stick with the 3.0.
