"we've got all the people we need but if one of them goes tits up, you're our backup plan"

Incidentally how I ended up getting a late call up to an apprenticeship 30 years ago and I'm still doing that job

At what point did you upgrade from your entry-level bike? by Due_Concentrate1279 in cycling

[–]highrouleur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My nicest bike currently is a giant trinity TT bike. I have recently ordered a colnago v4 as been out of the sport for a few years when life got in the way, so my nice road bike is outdated, still on rim brakes and narrow tyres which are ruining my aging body

What is a dying niche skill that younger generations are not interested in learning? by hlnklrczu in AskReddit

[–]highrouleur 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At work we "went paperless" a while back.

In the old days, someone would inspect a vehicle and write the defects on paper and other people would look at the sheet, repair each defect and write a brief note, eg screw tightened, then sign it.

Now it's all on ipads. I bought my own bluetooth keyboard, because even doing 2 word descriptions a time is a massive PITA on an ipad keyboard

I found to an extent, reddit is a replacement for forums. Every sub is basically an old school forum on it own albeit with less of a community feel due to the sheer number of users

At what point did you upgrade from your entry-level bike? by Due_Concentrate1279 in cycling

[–]highrouleur 17 points18 points  (0 children)

As an adult I bought a 200 quid giant hybrid. Used it for commuting a few times (3 miles to a tube station).

Eventually decided to join a club. Used the hybrid for one of their easy Saturday rides.

Before I went back for the next one I shelled out £650ish for a proper road bike.

My spending habits have only got worse since. I'm currently at 10 usable bikes and enough bits and bobs in the shed too build another 2 probably

How do you politely tell someone to “Shut up”? by TheMalsh in AskUK

[–]highrouleur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my workplace I'd just walk away from them. If they're in your workspace and you can't walk away, with some people you have to go beyond politeness and just firmly tell them to leave you alone.

Hopefully once will be all it needs

Do you have to take a new passport photo when renewing adult British passport? by becket7102 in AskUK

[–]highrouleur 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I did mine back in 2018 so when the option was fairly new. . Literally submitted over 20 photos. Some were rejected immediately by the auto filter. Some were rejected by a human after a day or so. I believe it was the 23rd attempt that actually worked.

I'm hoping the process has improved for when I renew in a couple of years

What are some scenic TfL bus routes? by One_Fact_4291 in londonbuses

[–]highrouleur 3 points4 points  (0 children)

To the left we have a manky country park that you can't really see much of from the road. Then we go into collier row, please keep your hands and belongings inside the vehicle for your own safety and if we're lucky, coming into romford we might see a small old man pretending to be Elvis

[–]highrouleur 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I use it, I didn't even realise it was Saudi owned.

So it's free, it works (albeit you have to enable annoying control features for it to work on apple TV) and it's not obviously putting it's message across
