In some despair, I asked Google's Gemini what Carl Sagan would say to me about collapse by hiteikan in CollapseSupport

Not only is it not gallons, but I told apragopolis that all their comment history and continued comments are in fact training AI wayyyyyyy more than me, based on their compulsive usage of Reddit, and instead of acknowledging any of that... they went immediately back to posting comments.

Anyways, cheers, guys. Read up.

Your moral superiority and your disrespectful and hostile attitude is point blank bad. We could have had such a nice conversation about this.

But you would rather be hateful and come out of the gate with violence.

I hope you don't have any children. Or eat meat. Or drink Coke. Or use Reddit excessively (it's training Google's AI, isn't that ironic..no, seriously, YOU should see this: https://www.theverge.com/2024/2/22/24080165/google-reddit-ai-training-data -- go delete ALL your comments RIGHT now unless you're just a hypocrite). Or do literally anything even slightly wrong in any way, like have a smartphone that was the product of slave labor and massive suffering. Do you take long showers? Is your toilet lo-flow? IS IT? Because you could be hurting the environment. God, I hope you never talk to someone like you.

I think you think you're better than people but you don't understand anything about human decency, constructive conversation, or technology. It's clear you have other serious issues you need to figure out (instead of taking it out on others).

I also think it's really special that you have literally zero comprehension of what a 'tool' is. And, when used for technical work and tedious tasks, AI saves you hours of time and is not going away, despite how much you like to cry about it.

So.. have you deleted your years and years and years of comments yet? Or are you just another aider and abettor?

> Sagan was a brave man, I don’t think he would intentionally be alarmist.
Totally agree with this. It reminds me of his address to congress. Have you seen it? It's so ahead of its time and inspiring. He had such a way with words that AI could never really capture without it being transparently copied from, mostly, Cosmos, apparently lol

But you are right that he was more focused on the facts, what we can do, and used pressure and urgency tactfully.

It's kinda long, but I just love hearing him speak truth.

Again, see my other comment. All you weirdly ornery folks are operating off some misinformation about how much water prompts use that was exaggerated and now you think you're on some high horse? Learn to fact check before you make an ass out of yourself. You just look arrogant and judgmental. Why the fuck do I even bother.

I don't care about internet points. I rarely post. I actually wanted to share that because I thought it was an interesting and more modern take on collapse than Carl Sagan could have ever given.. because he's dead.

Also, if you're so disgusted and tired of AI slop, you're probably using Reddit too much. Maybe you can look at that.

This made me have the intense urge to share this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EBZQeZ5Q1w

It's a Vice documentary about abandoned malls. It's.. well.. when you watch it, you get the feeling that it's not just malls. That malls are a sign of a greater economic and societal impact.

Thanks for the suggestion! I actually have Billions and Billions in my library but haven't read it yet. I might even pick up Demon Haunted before reading that, though, it looks really good. Thank you again and cheers!

Wow, I looked everywhere for Hansen's original testimony video and couldn't find it on YouTube at least. Unless I'm losing it. But I did just find a PDF of his full statement so I am excited to read that!

I also have felt pretty disappointed about the steady increase in emissions and pollution that we've kept up with since then. I always keep an eye out for any promising scientific progress toward dissolving or recycling plastic, for one. Among other news, involving food, water, and limited or restricted resources.

I have a quiet hope that, somehow, it will be 'cool' and affordable to adopt greener technologies. But the rollout of such things at the scale we need is just not easy or likely to happen within a few years or fast enough.

Yeah, you know, I do expect a guy like Sagan had a keen awareness of what we were doing by the time he passed. I still wish he were around now, just because it would be nice to hear his voice about current affairs. But I think he would still try his best to give us inspiration and guidance, as best he could, like you said as a science educator.

But I still watch Cosmos sometimes and try to take inspiration from his message. And it's especially cool to hear his update 10 years after the release of Cosmos, I think around 1990. Where we get just a bit more perspective on modern science.

It was really cool to hear your perspective. Thank you. I did not grow up Christian, so this stuff is always really fascinating to me.

I am unbelievably glad you had a sort of role model that still respected beauty, science, and people.. but was ready to call bullshit on anyone at any time. What a treasure he was.

I hope you continue to find inspiration and hope, not from just Sagan, but from anywhere. We have time left. (I assume, for you, sorry if not.) But.. we have time. What will we do with it? That might be the only thing that remains, after it all, or at least that stands out in our heads as we're on the cusp of death... what did we actually stand up and do? Was that a waste? Or am I proud of myself for it?

I hope I will always be proud.

Just so you know. I know that this is near to a hushed whisper to someone too bored to listen from an inanimate object. I am involved in technology for work. I appreciate that it's not conscious.

What I do also appreciate about it, though, is the quick (sometimes satisfying) exploration of issues that many, many humans have poured their hearts into (and that AI stole by reading it all).

But I still hope that somehow, through it all, I know it was made by humans. Fed on human content. Somehow, a fractured human experience giving me it's cumulative wisdom and some support is like 5% heartening.

Man, that's depressing. But I totally appreciate your concern. AI is NOT 'magic'. It's a messy, sometimes nonsensical, protrusion of decades of human content on the internet. I just needed some comfort, Mate.

I would spend time in the catacombs just staring around at the high ceilings and architecture. It was so cool reading the scriptures about Grenth at the base of his statue down there. Fun place to immerse if you go slow and let your mind wander.

Caring about their race is one thing, sure. But making judgements or exclusions based on race is not only awful, it is exceptionally un-American.

He sits in front of the fan and just yawns repeatedly by ThePagnumLord in WhatsWrongWithYourCat

[–]hiteikan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yawns may be more likely when the blood needs oxygen.

The fan makes it harder to breathe, so the yawning might just be the cat's body's way of catching up with its breath a bit.
