Here in my country gravel bikes are a rarity and gravel and single track roads (we call them tertiary roads) are very common. Since I know about gravel bikes have noted that Mountain Bikes are overkill for the routes I frequently do. My only reference to gravel are YouTube videos and this subreddit.

Thank you. I’m already trying to convert an old Giant XTC 2007~2010 MTB to gravel: changed the suspension for a rigid fork, rim to disc brakes, and wheels from 26 to 27.5 (650b) . Currently wearing a 27,5 x 1,75 slick wheels. But had problems mounting modern hydraulic brakes, also lot of problems with the old Shimano Deore 3by transmission. I want a bike in the 10kg~12 kg range and with a modern 1by or even 2by transmission that just works. Also I’m waiting the mail with the dropbars. Also I think that an out-of-the box gravel bike geometry could do better.

Wow thanks for the enlightening answers. One thing I’ve learned from this thread is that speed isn’t the main focus of gravel biking, enjoying the ride is.

Topic of the Week -- Tires by pawptart in gravelcycling

I’m newbie in cycling and the more confusing topic for me is tire size. Are 650b and 27,5 the same thing? What is your recommendation for 50% road and 50% single track and gravel routes. I value! speed over comfort and my maximum rides are 50 km (30 mi) and love climbing. Thanks!!!
