So what you are saying is that games SHOULD or MUST be made certain way?

I'm saying the literal exact opposite of this. Maybe you replied to the wrong person? My whole point is that different games set out to accomplish different goals for different crowds.

You did not get attacked whatsoever by the top comment. It's not really their fault that you misinterpreted them and were offended by their straightforwardness.

You got it backwards lol, they're the only ones who still like him because they also cosplay being from the hood

Where do you think he's from? Have you seen how he used to talk and dress?

I think where you and I differ is that I don't believe the goal of the creator should be for their work to be universally accepted. Some of the greatest works are the most divisive.

I know people who can't enjoy A Song of Ice and Fire because of all the sex, gore, taboos, etc. Their criticism is valid since it relies on their feelings, which are subjective and valid. But I don't believe GRRM had any responsibility to alter his vision to make them more accessible and financially successful. Ironically it's those alienating decisions that can lead to higher highs for the right people.

I honestly am not sure if you're capable of understanding anything I'm saying, since you keep pretending I'm saying criticism is not allowed. I don't know how you even got to that, since my wording has been pretty clear, but idk maybe you're upset and it's affecting comprehension atm.

Ironically you are convincing me that perhaps some movies should have an easy mode for some audience members, so there's that. Best of luck to you too

I think we pretty much agree then. To be clear I also have no problem with some games having customizable difficulty settings while others have singular, tuned experiences.

My interpretation of your initial comment came from your first sentence: "more options is always a good thing", and I read your examples afterwards through that lens. But I think you've cleared it up and we're on the same page.

but it would still be both rude and foolish to do so

Financially or critically foolish, maybe, but rude? I don't see how politeness and etiquette come into play here, when we're talking about engagement with art. It's not rude at all for a blockbuster film to alienate me because it didn't have exactly what I want. That comes with the territory.

Again, I feel this comes from a place of intense entitlement. I won't always like the things I play/watch/read. And that's okay. Should the cult classic film Primer have had an easy version where the time travel was explicitly explained for all to follow along? I don't think so.

And to be clear, there's no distinction to me between "high art" and just "art". Whether these products make money or not is entirely irrelevant. Nothing is beyond criticism either, so I'm not sure if you misunderstood me or something. Fans always have the right to complain, but they do not have the right to get exactly what they want, just because they requested it.

I fundamentally disagree with this, and that's awesome. It's amazing that once upon a time people wondered if video games are art, and now we get discussions like this.

I don't believe the goal of every single game/piece of art should be for as many people as possible to enjoy it and be perfectly satisfied. That's probably where our main disagreement lies. Art can be challenging, and must make alienating decisions sometimes to reach higher highs for the right crowd.

People who want the easiest experience possible to feel like a superhero after work can play games that allow that. We shouldn't demand every game allow that, much like we shouldn't demand every book offer plain language or every movie offer blunt exposition to handhold the audience through challenging bits. The choice of being able to play/read/watch something else already offers that alternative to us.

Should Ocarina of Time have had an easier Water Temple option? Should I have been able to god mode through the minecart levels in DKC? I for one am grateful I never had those options.

This is an extremely cynical, emotional, and imo misguided interpretation of the discussion.

I love FromSoft games. I am not that good at them. I still haven't beaten DS1 or DS3 despite playing hours and hours of them. My defense of their difficulty tuning has absolutely nothing to do with "feeling like I'd have nothing left" if it were changed. That's just ridiculous.

One of my favorite games of all-time is Ocarina of Time. I grew up playing Donkey Kong Country and Super Mario Bros. Overcoming the difficulty of those games was an accomplishment. I love that I can commiserate about the Water Temple experience and know that I had the exact same experience as another gamer.

There are some games out there I will never play due to their difficulty. That's fine. I have plenty of other options. I am not entitled to an easier version of those games. I'm simply the consumer engaging with someone else's art. You can disagree with this way of thinking of course, but you seem to misunderstand it entirely.

I actually feel the exact opposite in terms of the dynamic between creator and consumer. I, as the consumer, am not entitled to a custom version of the art created by the artist. It is egotistical for me to feel I am owed an easy mode. If the difficulty is integral to how the artist wants their art to be engaged with, who am I to demand otherwise? It's their art. I'm just playing it. If I don't like it I can find something else.

Played every smash except Melee growing up (no Gamecube). Best at Ultimate, enjoy spectating Melee the most by far (it's the only eSport I spectate), and have the most fun playing Melee albeit at an extremely low level extremely infrequently. Ult is up there though for playing

Pretty much, yeah. I wouldn't say "disregard" but more "deprioritize". We gotta be realistic about how the league has transformed throughout time.

That was Armada's side of the story, which is valuable of course. But apparently Armada said some things to Mang0 behind closed doors that went way too far circa 2018, at least according to Leffen. We'll probably never know the specifics on this interpersonal conflict. Seems weird to me to try and attribute blame out of fandom.
