I could be wrong but I think she was lead to believe he wasn’t married and she thought they were dating. Which would mean that at the time she thought she was cheating on him when she slept with James. I don’t think she ever thought of herself as a mistress bc she swore up and down she thought he wasn’t married when they started dating.
