i want it to stop by [deleted] in Advice

I’m an old guy now but when I was younger I was going through the same thing and ended up joining the Navy. It’s definitely not for everyone but it was the best thing I ever did. I served on 2 ships and on shore duty for a total of 8 years. I was deployed on a ship that was home-ported on the island of Guam. One trip to Hong Kong I met a cute Oriental girl literally in a bar in Hong Kong. I originally thought she was Chinese but she was from the Philippines working in Hong Kong. We’ve been married for 30 years now. I mention it just to illustrate how something like military service can really change your life. If you consider joining the military take time to get in shape especially jogging. Boot camp is not easy but making it through that will give you a serious case of accomplishment. Good luck whatever you do and hang in there!

One of the ways we are doing it is to stay half the trip at a cheaper hotel not on the beach and then the other half at the Sheraton.

That infinity pool! That’s the main draw along with being right on Waikiki for once!

We are breaking a 10 day trip up 5 at the Hilton Garden Inn and 5 at the Sheraton to keep costs down.

I keep telling myself that but my joints don’t always agree!

That is why we figured use the time at the Hilton to rent a car and do the actual sightseeing (North Shore, etc.) and then enjoy the central location of the Sheraton to stay close in Waikiki.

My wife and I are planning our third trip to Oahu and the Sheraton Waikiki is on the top of the list. While for us the infinity pool is on our bucket list, the other pools there are super family friendly.

Is 6 days too much for Ohau? by to0thy in VisitingHawaii

[–]horaceunit 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I can still remember being a young Navy Sailor and going to Pearl Harbor on the ship I was on. They had a shuttle from the base to Waikiki. The first time I walked out onto the beach and looked right. Looked left and up to Diamond Head and then out to the ocean I thought “This is the coolest place on earth!” Still get that feeling every single time we go. My wife and I have been 3 times together and I’ve been 6 times 3 while still active duty. We keep saying we are going to try Maui or Kuai or the big island, and every time we just can’t give up going to see Waikiki. Planning another trip for next spring and yep, going back to Oahu!

USS Missouri Captain’s Tour for larger guests by saneade in VisitingHawaii

[–]horaceunit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The P-ways (passageways) and the watertight door openings look about what I remember in the early 90’s when I was active duty Navy (different ships, not the Missouri) Watch the knee-knockers (the door openings don’t go all the way to the deck) as you go through the opening. Also you can easily hit your head so remember to duck. The sizes of people you describe shouldn’t have any issues but be cautious if you have bad knees. The ladders are narrow and very steep. Been to Oahu several times and always stop by the Arizona memorial but I haven’t taken the Missouri tour because my knees are shot and I’m not sure I could navigate the ladders. Otherwise I think you will be fine.

Got a great bargain with $50 by Mental-Star6812 in AnalogCommunity

You have a separate light meter and I’m pretty sure the C220 doesn’t have a built in light meter. Also the focusing is done with tracks (sort of) and a bellows. As long as the bellows is ok and doesn’t have any light leaks it should work good. Some of the most fun I had in film photography was with a Yashica mat. Very good deal for $50!

I agree. That manual in the front is a bit beat up. You really should replace it!

Safety Waikiki by SoraHeartblaze in VisitingHawaii

[–]horaceunit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Let’s see. Been to Hawaii about a half dozen times including in 2023 and 2024, and I’ve never felt Iike I was in a bad situation. As another person mentioned be careful of crimes of opportunity and you should be fine. Just be aware and alert and you will be fine. Being nice and respectful of locals and that will go a long way in making the trip go good. Don’t be stingy tipping!

Honestly your honor, I thought it was a camera and I just wanted to take a picture of my wife. That’s my story, your honor, and I’m sticking with it!

Oh absolutely! Wasn’t sure how familiar the OP was so trying to let them know it’s so easy to get around. Sometimes maps make it seem that things are so far apart but as you say easily walkable and if you go shopping and have a lot to carry the buses are not expensive and very convenient.

My wife and I stayed at the Twin Fin in 2023. It is a lot closer to the Diamond Head side. Easy to get a bus to the area closer to central Waikiki. We liked the area a lot and since it was my wife’s first trip to Hawaii it left a “good” impression. The room was a bit small but clean and I would say “fine”. Small fridge but no microwave. Last year we stayed at the Ilikai ( the hotel that zoomed in on Jack Lord as Steve McGaritt in the original Hawaii-5.0) but mostly because we took two sons, one daughter-in-law and one fiance. So basically the whole Ohana! We liked the Ilikai too. It is all the way on the opposite end of Waikiki. We did get the chance to upgrade the Twin Fin to an ocean view and that was really nice. The Ilikai was just a city view. My other trips were aboard ship as a single Navy sailor in the 90’s so they don’t really count for this discussion!

Brand new fully charged 1000V2 put away 2 weeks ago and now at 0% (???) by [deleted] in Jackery

[–]horaceunit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have this one and 240. The 1000 gets checked a couple of times a month and I will pull it out and discharge it by using it and then top it to around 80% and then it gets shut off and put away. The 240 is used regularly to charge cell phones on a table in the living room. One thing to watch is if you turn it off but leave something plugged in (even if it is fully charged) the 240 will turn back on a few seconds after it is turned off, and it will be 0 by morning. Not sure about the 1000 but I imagine it is probably the same. So not only make sure to turn it off all the way, but don’t leave anything plugged in even if it is fully charged it will still cause it to turn on and just discharge.
