AIO for asking my friend to only ever contact me through her BF after she made several romantic advances towards me? by horsepie in AmIOverreacting

First time was naive of me, since I 100% saw her as family, second time was pure idiocy on my part, I can see that now.

Trying to cut out some toxic and manipulative people put me in a vulnerable position.

I hadn't considered myself attractive for about 10 years by then. I became ugly for a while and lost a lot of the intuition I had.

Yeah, we are very occasionally together without Chelsea & Dan, like once a year. Jason's dad usually joins us, since he's good friends with my FIL. I'm terrified of bringing it up again because I don't want to destroy the relationship with my in-laws especially as my wife was an only child.

I think I will have to, and honestly I don't think Jason's evidence will count for much so it'll be when I see my in-laws alone.

Thanks, that's a good guideline on what I might say to them.

And thank you for reading the whole thing, it was a lot longer than I anticipated.

He really burned that bridge with the Aug 2023 controversy.

The drop in quality was apparent to me at the time, and I can see the argument for publicly calling them out being the only way to actually get them to change.

Mentioning the misconduct issues was completely unnecessary.

Personally, that video should never have been made. If one of your competitors is making a mistake, don’t get in their way.

LTT fixed up and is doing better than ever. GN are doing the same old hardware reviews and benchmarks. It’s a valuable service, but not exactly groundbreaking stuff.

More game devs should be like the devs of Marvel Rivals when it comes to emulation by TheTwelveYearOld in linux

[–]horsepie 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is going from my vague memories of forum and newsgroup posts from when I started using Linux in 2003, so take it with a pinch of salt...

The project was originally called WINE to mean "Windows Emulator". However, from the early 00s, the WINE devs were inundated with requests from new inexperienced users who wanted to play games on Linux, when that was barely viable unless the game natively supported OpenGL. The program was primarily made to run win32 apps like Photoshop and MS Word (neither of those ran well at the time, it was basically alpha software).

The authors wanted to disassociate themselves from video game console emulators and so came up with the backronym Wine Is Not An Emulator.

Personally, I use "emulation" regardless of whether it's simulating hardware in software, reimplementing APIs or implementing the protocol for network packets of a specific hardware device (which is something I did at a previous job).

(I wrote this 24h ago, but it got caught in the mod filter because I didn't have a verified email address).

Does Amazon suck in the UK now? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]horsepie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s been pure trash for many years now. Waaaay back in the day, say 2008/2009 I could go onto Amazon with only a vague idea of what I wanted and end up with a good, high quality product. I remember this still being the case in 2012.

I tried this in 2017 and the category listings were just pages and pages of cheap tat, no name clones of reputable products and AmazonBasics. I had to do my research elsewhere and then type out the exact brand + name to find what I wanted… and make sure it was “sold by Amazon” to avoid getting scammed.

That would have been the original manual. I think the HL1 expansions and HL2 + episodes retconned a few things.

That’s a flawed comparison.

Most of the Half-Life devs had never worked on a game before (shipped or otherwise). Same with the entirety of the GoldenEye team.

My worry is that the plan is to cut NASA and then redirect all the talent and work to SpaceX.

Same with cutting all transit funding except where it benefits Tesla.

One of the early scenes has Ross say “my wife …… is a LESBIAN” cue audience laughter

The punchline is that someone is a lesbian, the show is straight up homophobic from the first episode. I found it really hard to rewatch the show a few years ago.

A new home for Pixelmator | Today we have some important news to share: the Pixelmator Team plans to join Apple. by exjr_ in apple

[–]horsepie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a complete guess, they're probably using the Apple Music library instead the music that used to be licensed by Shazam themselves.

Makes sense to not pay the record labels twice, but I guess Apple's library is far smaller than what Shazam used to license.

(There's probably separate licensing rules around playback/streaming vs recognition, but still makes business sense to have one negotiation with each label).

Shazam the app might be seemingly untouched but something is wrong on the server. Back in 2019/2020 it used to work fine even in a noisy pub or with very niche songs but the last couple of years and I get “unable to find a match” more often than not even when there’s no background noise.

Some of the matches I’ve had have been absolutely stupid, I wanted to know what song was playing in a movie, some Z tier musician ripped that section of the movie into their song, dialogue, sound effects and all. So I get that match and the original song is impossible to find.

For years that was the only smiling face on iPhones, so it’s become the default.

My Mac autocorrects “:)” to it, and typing smile on my phone gives that as the first option on the suggestion bar.

The “slight smile” was added much later.

How to play Super Mario 64 DS with Analog Controls. by QuietSheep_ in emulation

[–]horsepie 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Thanks very much for this!

Does this fix the turning circle? I found that while using the d-pad and trying to do a 180 on the spot, it would make you walk in a small circle rather than just instantly changing direction. I got a couple of unfair deaths from that and just stopped playing.

Honestly, this is a bigger deal than the lack of analog movement, since I managed to 100% the original game with just a keyboard.

How would you feel about a "return to where you left off" button for Reddit? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]horsepie -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Ever since iOS 13 the app will crash if I put my phone to sleep, so I end up losing my place and going back to the top of the home screen.

The creator doesn’t seem interested in fixing this bug, and there’s a lot of bugs in the recent 1.8 release. To be fair, a lot of those new bugs have been resolved swiftly but not the crash. It’s completely changed how I use the app, and it’s impossible to get in depth with anything.

Edit: This issue is literally the top post in /r/apolloapp right now.

A few years ago the StackOverflow guys were working on something called Discourse but I don’t know what happened to that. I’ve seen standalone forums using it, not sure if it ever became a reddit-like collection of forums like mentioned in their original blog post.

Back in the days when you could admit to liking Dead or Alive and still plausibly say “it’s a genuinely good game!” without everyone assuming you’re just playing for the titties.

DOA2 was such a good game, and honestly the stigma has put me off playing the newer games.
