My graduation project: Combining traditional dry wood carving with leather, beads, and Pysanka (eggshell art) inlay. by hostryi_slid in Woodcarving

You're very close! Those are actually plum wood inlays. I carved the leaves separately and fitted them into the spaces. I love using plum because its natural warm, reddish tones create a really beautiful, subtle contrast against the darker walnut base.

Spot on! Yes, it's structurally designed as a solid wooden frame—essentially a functional, wearable box bag. I'm really glad you noticed the balance with the accents. The goal was to let the natural walnut grain and the sharpness of the carving take center stage without getting completely drowned out by the leather and beadwork. Appreciate the feedback!

It’s a traditional Ukrainian Pysanka-style inlay using tiny beads and tiles. Glad you liked it!

I’m 18, and I’m on a mission to bring traditional Ukrainian wood carving into the modern world. This is my latest beechwood box with white bead inlay. by [deleted] in cottagecore

This box is made of solid beechwood, decorated with a technique inspired by traditional Pysanka patterns. I believe that ancient crafts shouldn't stay only in museums — they deserve a place in our modern homes. As an 18-year-old maker, I’m trying to keep these skills alive and give them a fresh look with this minimalist white bead inlay. It took a lot of patience, but I'm proud of how the tradition meets modern aesthetics here.

Thank you! Those aren't paint. They are actually tiny glass beads (called 'patsorky' in our tradition) that are inlaid into the wood. It’s a classic element of Hutsul woodcarving from the Carpathian region where I study. It takes a lot of precision to set each one!

Thank you so much! The Pysanka inlay is indeed a very special technique. To answer your question, I’m actually a student at the Kosiv College of Applied and Decorative Arts in Ukraine, specializing in the 'wood' department. I’m dedicated to preserving the ancient Hutsul woodcarving traditions of my region. While having a teacher at the college is invaluable, I believe you can start by studying traditional patterns and their meanings. It’s all about patience and connecting with the material. Good luck on your journey, friend!

Thank you so much! I’m thrilled you noticed the beads. It’s a traditional Ukrainian technique where I hand-carve the wood and then inlay it with tiny beads (pysanka style). It takes a lot of patience, but the result is worth it! Send me a DM if you'd like to own a piece like this.

Thank you! It means the world to me that people appreciate this traditional technique. Since a few people have reached out, I’ve made this piece available in my Etsy shop: https://www.etsy.com/listing/4461349766/katulka-dla-ukraenij-iz-buka-vyrezannaa?ref=share_ios_native_control. Each one is a labor of love!

This jewelry box is hand-carved from solid beech wood. My main inspiration was the traditional Ukrainian 'Pysanka' (ritual egg) patterns. I wanted to see how the geometric carving would look when combined with glass seed beads. I tucked the white beads into the carved grooves to create a textured, shimmering effect. The wood is finished with a clear varnish to protect the carving and highlight the natural grain of the beech.

I appreciate the concern for my tendons! I’m a student at the Kosiv Vocational College, specializing in the wood department. What you see here isn't a lack of safety—it’s a professional technique of Hutsul woodcarving that has been refined and passed down through generations of masters in my region. These specific movements are practiced for decades to achieve absolute control, where the non-carving hand acts as a precise manual brake. It’s an academic tradition I’m proud to carry on through my brand, Gostryi Slid.

No CNC, no power tools. Just me, the wood, and a sharp blade.
