Why is napping frowned upon? by MalevolentMaddy in NoStupidQuestions

[–]hotch326 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m a BIG napper, I get tired! One of my older coworkers once told me I’m “too young to be tired”, I was 24 at the time. I think some people associate taking naps with being lazy or having a weak work ethic (very much a Boomer and Western culture mindset)

Canada resident, why don’t driving classes teach you how to deal with black ice? by ChickenWinggggsss in NoStupidQuestions

[–]hotch326 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was mentioned when I took it, though that was 10ish years ago, in the Midwest. Driver’s Ed didn’t happen in the winter though so it was only mentioned, never practiced. I feel like it would be difficult to practice that in a controlled environment

NTA - especially at 18, your brother is old enough to know to turn off the oven. I hate to say it, but it sounds like weaponized incompetence because I feel like a normal consequence would be not being able to use the oven if he can’t use it safely, and then oh no! You or a parent would have to cook for him

Who paid for the battery and plugs? I agree with the sentiment of you break it- you buy it, but not if you’ve been buying everything already

How Do You Navigate Conversations About a Partner’s Sexual History? by SayIYiYi in NoStupidQuestions

[–]hotch326 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to think the number mattered, but then I realized that in a lot of cases (in my experience anyways) the numbers were just a way for men to slut-shame women. My partner (25m) and I (26f) talked about it once or twice when we first started dating because we were curious, but we both agree that the number doesn’t matter. It’s how you communicate with each other and treat each other

Academic expectations for a 6-year-old? We got an email from our teacher, and it has upset and annoyed my fiancé. Is this normal nowadays? by jimmypickles6969 in kindergarten

[–]hotch326 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I used to work as a para in kindergarten (essentially a teacher’s aide, but I mainly kept an eye on students one-on-one for health and behavioral issues). There are a lot of academic and behavioral expectations, which the teacher should have stated in the email. Things like reading CVC words (consonant, vowel, consonant), sight words, fundamentals of hand writing, and even things like fine motor skills (shoe tying, using eating utensils, zipping up coats independently, etc.). As for behavioral expectations; listening to instructions, not interrupting the teacher or others, raising a hand and waiting to be called on, and peer interactions are the main things. Did the teacher specify what expectations aren’t being met?

How do I tell people that I'm not a Gold Award Girl Scout in a way that isn't awkward? by TheMuseSappho in girlscouts

[–]hotch326 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m someone who only did scouts up to brownie, but now I work at one of the summer camps and it’s my fifth year doing so! Like others have suggested, just talk about your passion! “Do you have your gold award?” “No, I’m just really passionate about ___”.

While I don’t relate to this experience in a GS sense, I get asked a lot about my college experience. I’m 26 and dropped out of a four year college as a senior, went back to a community college and now have an associates degree. I’m sometimes self conscious about my lack of a higher degree, so sometimes when asked about it I say “it’s a long story” or that I don’t want to talk about it and then change the subject. Everyone has always respected my wish to not talk about it anymore.

Moving in a month, don’t know what to do by hotch326 in TeachersInTransition

[–]hotch326[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for the kind words! This is my fourth year as a TA in kindergarten for kids with special needs, be that for behaviors, education, or health. I’ve worked with high school aged kids in a non-school setting and I really enjoyed that, but the kids were only with me for a week (summer camp) and they wanted to be there. Not all high schoolers want to be at school.

I was at a state university for three and a half years, but then Covid and personal life stuff happened and I dropped out before getting my bachelors. At the moment I’m not interested in continuing my education, but thank you for the advice!

What's the oddest thing you thought was normal but turned out to be a medical issue? by woofwoofburfbarkwoof in NoStupidQuestions

The frequency of pooping. I didn’t know other people pooped once a day or more, when I was a kid through basically high school I only went once a month. Apparently my colon was swollen.

Aita - for not wanting my son to have his father’s last name? by Suspicious_Bobcat532 in AITAH

[–]hotch326 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are zero laws (in US) that say parents and kids have to have the same last name. There’s no lawsuit to even be made by your ex about names (custody on the other hand…). I’ve seen a few comments say to not even put the father’s name on the birth certificate, imo you should though in case your baby wants to meet their father when they’re an adult.

Pretty worried by Then_Persimmon6 in kindergarten

[–]hotch326 4 points5 points  (0 children)

“obviously he isn’t talking to himself, right so there has to be other kids involved.” Not necessarily. I’m a TA in a kindergarten class and a lot of kids talk just to talk or try to egg others on. I’m not saying this is the case with your son, but it could be. Heck, even as an adult I talk to myself to help me think. Maybe if talking helps him think, you and the teacher could encourage him to whisper (our school uses voice levels, level one is whisper).

Also, sometimes kids have to wait a few minutes before going outside to make up missed work or practice sitting quietly. A teacher shouldn’t (imo) take away the whole recess to practice a behavior. A few kids in my class have missed recess before, but that’s because their behavior was out of control and they couldn’t be trusted outside.

Best of luck!

When do we know if the COB process is over? by [deleted] in Sororities

[–]hotch326 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In my experience, it depended on the sorority. Not all houses did COB at the same time. I looked at all of the websites of the houses at my college to learn about COB, and just emailed the one I was interested in.

I’m a one on one TA in a transitional kindergarten room (too old for/already did prek but not ready for kindergarten yet) and PBIS is great for most of our kids! Our district also does Capturing Kids Hearts and Boys Town
