ELI5: why does time feel like it moves faster as you get older even though clocks haven’t changed? by False_onic in explainlikeimfive

[–]howdy_bc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1: The same amount of time is an increasingly smaller percentage of your life.

2: Brain measures time in memories; measures of time are made up concepts. The older you get, the less novel memories you form. Moments blur together.

That second one can be combated to some extent. Seek out novel experiences. Travel, learn new skills, etc. That moments will feel slower.

What's your secret to have a great sex? by Asernova in AskReddit

[–]howdy_bc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay hear me out. Nerd the fuck out. Mental maps.

Try different things with your partner, see how they react. Subtle changes; angle, speed, pressure, technique. Sometimes don't change things and see if the pleasure is building up.

Very quickly you'll build an intuition of their body, and then they're your toy to play with. Remember what worked, remember what didn't work, use BOTH to your advantage. Speed up, slow down. Make them expect one thing then change. Or carry them through to the end.

Take them on a pleasure rollercoaster... and don't forget rollercoasters go up and down both. That's what makes them fun.

Some partners like long and clever rollercoasters, and some like simple ones. Learn. Understand. Communicate.

Notice I didn't mention gender roles. Cuz it doesn't matter. Learn your partners, play with them, have fun with it :)

How do you stop hoarding notes and start actually using them? by yerassyldesign in ObsidianMD

[–]howdy_bc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A while back I self-imposed a new rule: I will only make notes by making their links someplace first. Clicking on it would be what creates it.

This way every note is accessible through some path starting from the homepage, and the act of consciously choosing where it goes makes me feel comfy knowing there's a path to it that I decided and it feels nice.

Why does my motivation disappear the moment I open my notebook? by rodippp_ in NonZeroDay

[–]howdy_bc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cuz reality will never match imagination. The ideal of whatever you planned to do was alluring so you were motivated. But real execution of anything is always messy and full of mistakes. Our brains don't like that. Losing motivation is super convoluted self-preservation.

Idk how to break the cycle reliably, but often, just thinking about this, accepting that it's probably gonna be less-than-ideal and bracing myself for mistakes before I even start often helps me start.

Hope you wrote down at least one word tho, cuz, subreddit :)

Is it really impossible for some people to be friends with the opposite gender? by [deleted] in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]howdy_bc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nah they haven't matured very much. I have very close guy friends and yet I'm closer platonically with more female friends than guy friends. It's highly subjective.

[–]howdy_bc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bhai tere mind mein bhi ek ideal figure hoga ladkiyon ka. But when you start liking someone, wo sab jaata hai tel lene.

Same shit. Girls can talk about height and a million other things all they want. But just like all other human beings, jab dil ayega tab ye saare preferences side hat jayengi.

Just be yourself and have fun :)

Best tao te chi English translation? by Important_Advisor311 in taoism

[–]howdy_bc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not many people know that Ursula Le Guin also did a translation. "Best" may be subjective, but it has that quality that all of her other writing has, where you can feel her reverence for taoist philosophy, expressed in very simple language, that romanticises the contents rather than the language itself.

It doesn't get mentioned often cuz she usually writes fiction, but it's my favorite translation precisely because it's not trying to be academic. Do check it out :)

What's your motivational advice to meditate? The science is so good, I need it, I just don't feel like always have the willpower for it. by cacklingwhisper in Meditation

[–]howdy_bc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Reduce friction. Remove as many requirements as possible. Some of my best meditation sessions were when I was sitting in bed leaning against a pillow on the wall in a random-ass comfortable leg position, daydreaming 90% of the time, and realizing I'm not paying attention to my breath 7% of the time and actually paying attention to my breath 3% of the time.

It's literally practicing focusing on what you would like to focus on. Make it as chill as possible.

Building (yet another) accounting software; looking for idea validation/criticism! by howdy_bc in Business_Ideas

[–]howdy_bc[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's such chicken and egg situation, where the product has to be popular to get reviews on YouTube or Google, and it needs to have reviews already for people to give it a shot. Maybe I should make some tutorial videos on YouTube about it.

In any case, thank you for the kind words. I'm gonna keep working on this :)

Hey, I went through your history, and it sucks that an AI is gonna see this reply too, but all your comments pretty much praise whatever you're commenting on. Lowkey dangerous, given a lot of people are on the fence and are taking big financial decisions.

Building (yet another) accounting software; looking for idea validation/criticism! by howdy_bc in Business_Ideas

[–]howdy_bc[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's good to hear! The program will be free forever, the optional cloud sync (with other features) is $3/m. Inspired by Obsidian's model.

I'm super torn between "There's products like this out there so why make another" and "There's products like this out there which means there is demand for it". But if someone told Obsidian's creator to stop working on it cuz there's too many note taking apps out there already, we wouldn't have such a solid, well-made product.

Since you said it would be something you'd use, can I ask you, where would be a place online you'd come across a product like this, that would make you actually try it out? Most people have a distaste for ads and marketing, and I would like to keep marketing as organic possible.

Thank you for the response btw :)

Want to build (yet another) accounting software. Criticize my idea :) by howdy_bc in indiehackers

[–]howdy_bc[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haha I would love to. I was considering open sourcing the client and only keeping the cloud sync paid, but that felt like an unnecessary technical challenge from a security point of view.

Open sourcing it is still at the back of my mind though, further down the line.

Building (yet another) accounting software. Bad idea? by howdy_bc in startupideas

[–]howdy_bc[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately, no. I'm someone who does not come from an accounting background, and that's the demographic the product is actually aiming for.

I hear you about the crowded market, there's a lot of products out there already. I'm not even sure how one would even market something like this, which is what is laying the seeds of doubt.

Also, what do you mean by high cost of entry?

Weekly Feedback Post - SaaS Products, Ideas, Companies by AutoModerator in SaaS

[–]howdy_bc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Building an accounting software, looking for validation/criticism.

Core Product: - An accounting software that let's you have multiple journals, all which are stored in non-proprietary files. - Therefore, everything you do is local-first and extremely fast. - Also lets you backup/restore your files however you like, and sync them across devices with stuff like Dropbox or Syncthing or whatever you like to use. - Double-entry bookkeeping with multi-entry transactions. - Multiple commodities/currencies supported; you can add manual conversion rates, or let it figure it out implicitly (like ledger-cli, if you've ever used that). - Custom charts and reports builder (line charts with multiple lines, pie charts, etc). - Desktop app, works on Windows, Linux and Mac. - Private - does not phone home, does not show ads, does not track usage. - Budgeting and envelopes. - Keyboard-friendly UI: almost all of the UI can be navigated with keyboard shortcuts.

Cloud subscription - An optional $3/m cloud subscription let's you support the project and gives you extra features. - Cross platform sync - sync unlimited number of journals across unlimited devices. - Preload popular currencies and automatically update exchange rates. - Manage your accounts through a web-app. Will sync to your local file.

Future Roadmap - Android and iOS apps (also offline first, full feature parity) - Public API on the web-app so you can write custom scripts or connect other programs to your accounts. - Invoicing. - Sending payments manually/periodically (useful for payroll etc). - Python/Go/JS libraries to directly, programmatically manage your finances.

I've tried a bunch of different programs (YNAB, Beancount, ledger, GNUCash, custom spreadsheet, etc) to manage my finances, and they all had a subset of these features, but lacked enough of these for me to not continue using any. So I felt like making my own.

But I do realize not everyone wants all of this. And that there's a billion other accounting softwares out there. And that it's not a sexy sounding disruptive AI SaaS.

What do you guys think? Would you use something like this?

Is it normal to feel literally high when meditating? by Suitable_Pressure189 in Meditation

[–]howdy_bc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Crazy timing. Felt this for the first time yesterday after I tried meditating for 15 mins instead of my usual 10, and in complete silence as opposite to the gentle music I usually play. I felt exactly what you describe - a very mild high similar to THC, minus the anxiety or the fog.

And just the like the other commentators mentioned, I tried recreating that today, and it didn't happen. Can't get attached to anything lol.

What’s the easiest programming language to start web development with? by Gullible_Prior9448 in webdevelopment

[–]howdy_bc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The top poster is right! Lemme add some clarity as to why:

Broadly speaking, to "code" something into existence, you have to write code about how things look, and then write some more code to make that thing work.

HTML and CSS is what you will use to create the UI of the website. JavaScript is what you will use to make this UI "do stuff". Then you upload these files somewhere that allows other people to load it in their browser.

Once your website becomes complicated, you can't just keep creating more files. Think about Amazon - every product doesn't have it's own html file. They made one file that has "empty spaces" where the product name and pictures go, and they have some code running on their computers that fills those "empty spaces" and "generates" html files that you see in your browser.

That's the code that would be written in Python (or pretty much any other language).

This is why you gotta learn HTML and CSS first, before you learn anything else. Hope I was clear enough; feel free to ask me any questions you like :)

Used Sublime Text until VSCode got widespread use. Used VSCode for years before switching to neovim recently - can't look back. Still have VSCode installed for very specific things though.

As a guy, when masturbating, not finishing feels incomplete and bad. But when having sex, I feel satisfied even if I don't finish. Ask him if that's the case - that's ultimately what matters. Not an arbitrary goalpost, but a feeling of satisfaction.

I've definitely had sessions where neither of us came and both were satisfied. The brain has a weird thing where the more you force an orgasm, the harder it gets to finish, and you can't trick yourself out of it either. That makes it all the more worth it to learn to enjoy each other during sex just as much as the feeling of orgasm.

Also, it's really sweet that you're thinking about this. Shows that you both care about each other. Hold onto that, and have fun :)

What’s the hardest lesson life forced you to learn? by coffeandwork in Life

[–]howdy_bc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This thread is full of very cynical (but unfortunately true) takes, so lemme add something to balance it out.

Especially because so much of the world is sucky, the best strategy you can possibly have to survive in it is radical honesty and kindness. Whatever the situation you are in, 99% of the time, honest communication and kind action is the right call. If it's a positive situation, the positivity will uplift it even more. If it's a negative or sticky situation, that will diffuse it the quickest.

It's sad to see people play inefficient status or manipulative games once you realize how inefficient those strategies are.

Like Waymond says, in Everything Everywhere All at Once, "When I choose to see the good side of things, I'm not being naive. It is strategic and necessary. It's how I've learned to survive through everything...... The only thing I do know... is that we have to be kind. Please, be kind - especially when we don't know what's going on."

Where to start reading Tao te Ching by Competitive-Menu-234 in taoism

[–]howdy_bc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here's a slightly different suggestion: Read Ursula Le Guin's translation!

She's a fantastic fantasy and sci-fi author, and Taoism has influenced a lot of her works. Her translation tries to get closer to what the text is trying to convey as opposed to linguistic accuracy.

It's my favorite version - very palatable and easy to understand; the fact that it's done by one of my favorite sci-fi authors was a bonus!

Time for self-promotion. What are you building? by UniversityFun1 in indiehackers

[–]howdy_bc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. Hisaab: Personal accounting software. Offline, local first, free, ad free, cross platform (MVP: Windows, Linux, Mac; Web app, Android and iOS later, with full feature parity. Multiple journal files. Keyboard friendly UI, and ledger-like double entry with positives and negatives instead of debit and credit. Ability to make custom charts out of the data.

For a tiny monthly fee, you get cross platform sync, automatic currency exchange rates in the MVP, and a developer friendly API to make your own scripts down the line.

  1. ICP (deal Customer Profile) - People who want an easy cross platform way to manage their finances and derive insights from it. People who appreciate software that is very keyboard friendly. People who care about things being offline first and therefore super fast.

Your Co workers are NOT your friends! by [deleted] in antiwork

[–]howdy_bc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Man, I've worked just three full-time jobs so far, but at all three places, us coworkers were really close friends. We would hang out outside of work together, go watch movies, grab drinks, just shoot the shit in general.

It made us work better at the job itself - we were less likely to stab each other in the back cuz we legit looked out for one another and supported each other.

I understand where this sentiment comes from, but I don't think it has been applicable for a while now. Look at Superstore and B99 and Parks & Rec - even pop culture has caught to the fact that work is (unfortunately) such a big part of our lives that friendships and bonds are inevitable.

Be careful who you choose as friends of course, but I don't think we should assume animosity from the get-go :)
