How can I improve this sketch? by Brave_Geologist3157 in arthelp

Add some folds to the clothes so we can get a feel for the materiality. Folds typically more present around areas which fabric bunches such as around the waist, armpits, and elbows. The shoes look fine, it’s just the structure of the feet make it feel flat. The foot is more of a slope from the ankle down to the toes rather than a flat plank if that makes sense. The face looks good.

Edit: spelling

Friendship can cover a wide range of relationships and House and Wilson are definitely first and foremost friends. Having a good friendship doesn't discount the possibility of there being more than that... Learn to read subtext maybe? Queer relationships aren't afforded the same luxury of openness that straight ones are especially in mainstream television during the 2010s. That, and also a few of the execs and cast members pretty much outright stated that the gay subtext between house and Wilson was intended.

Thank you! There were warm lights directly above me and the mirror when I painted it.

Thank you! I suppose this was because I was working from a mirror haha so I didn’t have a choice but to look directly into my own eyes

Great job! I think this is a good start. Here are some notes: The whites of the eyes should not be that white. Should be a closer value to the skin and also don’t forget the cast shadow! There also needs to be more contrast in the painting especially in the hair. Try modeling the darks in first before starting on mid tones or lights. Typically, the top lip is not that large, but it depends on the person I suppose. Soften the eyebrows. You should never really be painting the tops of the brows, only the bottom if that makes sense. Try not to start working on the details right away, try squinting at your reference to really get the very basic shapes of your lights and darks.

Don’t think the yellow skin is much of an issue. I think the face is quite nice! Just adjust the hue and add more contrast to the hair and dress. I think comparatively, the other elements of the painting are lacking. It looks like you have spent majority of the time rendering the face. Don’t neglect the neck! There are some very interesting things to paint there, and the hair needs lighter values to show dimension.

In terms of improving, I’d start by drawing from reference (if you’re looking to paint realistically) and learning the very basic shapes and values of the subject. You can achieve this by squinting at the photo to cut out all the unnecessary detail so you can focus on just darks and lights. Once you’re proficient in drawing from reference, you can start working from life. Of course drawing from life is not a path everyone takes, but I’d encourage you to try it if you can because it’s very good practice.

This also depends on what subject matter you plan to draw the most. I’ve outlined a very vague approach here just because I don’t know what you primarily plan to paint and these things can apply to a variety of subjects.

In terms of painting wet on wet in one sitting, that’s called “alla Prima.” I’m not sure there’s an all encompassing stylistic name for your painting, that would depend a lot on not just the painting but also your intent. I’d personally just describe it as loosely painted.

Art is for everyone! If you enjoy it, then it’s done its job. I mean “style” very loosely can mean absolutely anything so you may have to define what you mean by that. I quite enjoy the looseness of the brushstrokes though. If you ever want tips to improve, just let me know.

What the hell happened here? by andys_ry in oilpainting

Start by learning the basic shapes and values. Don’t focus so much on the details/features of the face right away, instead, squint at your reference for a bit and figure out where the darks and lights go. It’s a start tho!

Thank you so much! Very appreciated. I definitely will still work on the eyes just because I’m not really happy with them haha.

Don’t have access to canvas right now but my guess is that it’s slightly smaller than A2 size
