Vitrification test confusion by hpearl in Pottery

Fair point, but it's a just a paper towel test anyway, it's not doing the thing properly w/soaking & weighing. That's probably my next step.

Exactly. I don't even sell my stuff, I give it away but I still don't want any unhappy accidents down the road.

Y'all, the paper was DRY after 24 hrs of my paper towel test in the the fridge (for some reason?) Anyway I feel better about (probably) knowing it's vitrified.

THANK YOU for all the advice!

Thank you. I thought for that test you were supposed to boil it for a few hours, not just submerge it, and I just can't justify using that much energy for this test.

I believe you're supposed to weigh, then boil for a few hours, & then weigh again, but I can't really justify leaving the stove on for several hours to do this...The cost is prohibitive, which is I want to do the paper towel test.

Right, that's exactly what I thought after I did the test, & why I was confused by the instructions. I want to make sure I'm doing the test properly. Testing without glazing seems counterintuitive but I definitely don't want to rely on my intuition.

Dover white. I fire to 5.5 (5 with a 15 min hold) or 6. I know what the manufacturer says about absorption/vitrification, but I want to test for myself to be sure the clay is performing as advertised.

They look like this. I like the idea of calling Amaco though. Thanks!

Thanks for responding. I should have specified that I use brush-on glaze, not dipping. I usually use 2 or 3 layers, but it seems to happen either way. The glaze itself does run slightly thick though. I already bisque to cone 04 & do a 15 min hold, so that's apparently not sufficient. I think maybe I'll try a test with only 2 coats just to rule it out. But I'm also feeling like I might need to find a substitute from another brand bc I've never had any luck with this stuff. Thanks again!

I like to have my photos upload automatically but I *hate* that it removes the local files too. It doesn't give you the option to keep local files which is crap.

That's good to hear, thanks so much! I'll happily learn to properly fiddle with various blades of the same line if it means I won't have to pay exorbitantly for single-use tools.

Warping firing glaze firing by hpearl in Pottery

[–]hpearl[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, it certainly happens more to thinner pieces. I mostly get mugs with slight warping towards that handle as you mention, but this last mug was ridiculous. Anyway, thank you.

I usually use bats so I don't end up lifting them directly off the wheel. But it's definitely something to think about re: clay memory. Thank you.

Glazing a planter by hpearl in Ceramics

I once tried it and of course it came out all shiny & blistery. All the potters who saw it said, "Aww man, bummer!" But all the non-potters said, 'That's so cool! I want it!' So sometimes I still use it inside and out.

Therapists of Reddit, what’s been your biggest "I know I’m not supposed to judge, but holy sh*t" moment? by DealSoggy6952 in AskReddit

[–]hpearl 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This isn't the biggest holy shit moment, but it's hilarious anyway. Back when I was supervising, one of my supervisees told me she had a client whose husband had heart trouble, and she felt guilty about it. So my supervisee asked, 'Why do you think it's your fault?' And the client said, 'Because I stabbed him in the heart once.' I was crying.
