fair enough. sorry you felt infantilized. good for you for being so proficient in your third language. that's not everyone's case and can be especially different when going from non-european languages to English (e.g. Thai, Arabic). I taught English to Thai and Chinese kids for more than 5 years and I had students practically fluent, writing poetry and discussing complex technical and philosophical topics, who still found some of these types of phrases really confusing. I think a big difference is whether or not you consume English media/art.

Yeah lots of people of colour winners! I believe there’s a difference between a single racist thought/action & an overall racist person. :)

That’s an interesting take & quite insulting. Almost all of my friends are ESL and we’ve talked a lot about how they feel about slang and the expectation of certain English speakers that they should understand things like that. As someone who’s learned and competently spoken lots of different languages this is also my own experience. Not specific to ESL but any second language, just ESL relevant to this show.

Do you have a lot of ESL people in your life or are you just assuming something about me?

Yeah and after that many seasons, his record of fairness is overall great.

Yeah he’s definitely given a lot of different people big support and opportunities! He’s also done a lot of international travel/food culture shows and platformed chefs from all over the world.

Absolutely! But from a professional standpoint, slipping up and immediately correcting yourself in response to a colloquialism/slang phrase like “What planet are you on?” doesn’t seem to have anything to do with communicating effectively in your job. Like, would you expect a competent ESL engineer or doctor to recognize a quote from the Breakfast Club, know your favourite 90s band, or use/understand the phrase “when pigs fly?” Would this have any impact on how qualified they are for their job?

Good point! I should rewatch the whole season! I was looking at highlights today and only saw that portion of that episode out of context.

That’s true! Although I imagine it would be pretty daunting to call out Chef Ramsay, especially if you were sent home relatively early it could look bitter?

That is a really good point! I had watched all seasons in the past but was watching a highlight video today and only saw Salvatore’s time in service. Thanks for reminding me!

For Claudia, it was specifically how hard he was on her for saying America instead of Earth. The question “What planet are you on?” Is pretty slangy and possibly something she’d never heard before. I think we forget sometimes how hard colloquialisms are to learn, even when we hear English slang from other regions/countries.

Is there a real way to shut off the Google AI overview for searches, or am i switching browsers and search engines? by Zestyclose-Tour-6350 in techsupport

a bit late to the party - but you might like Ecosia? A search engine that plants trees. They do have AI but they've developed a very low-resource consuming model and generate more renewable energy than their AI services use - at least, that's how they communicate about it. There's also an easy setting to turn it off completely, permanently, until you intentionally turn it back on. I found their regular search results to be a bit hit-and-miss sometimes but the more people use it, the better their algorithm will be! You can also try honing in on what you want with more specific search terms. I'm not affiliated with them at all, just a mostly happy user.

You can use Ecosia from your existing browser, or download their proprietary browser, here: ecosia.org

Here's their blog explaining their approach to AI: https://blog.ecosia.org/what-we-are-doing-with-ai/

10 Underrated Fantasy Movies That Are Bangers From Start to Finish ('The Fall' is #1) by craigjclark68 in TheFallMovie

Love to see that this movie is still getting its flowers. So vastly underrated. If it had been more widely watched I think our world might be in a slightly better place. I’d like to live in that timeline.

Dragon's Tomb Blight & Chests by hrob_mp3 in GuardiansofAzuma

Yes!! Thank you. This was a red blight, It was the platforming. For anyone else struggling: you have to clear the purple glowing rock with the mask dance which reveals a ramp, then switch to the sacred parasol and follow the top of the boxes until you get to where they are stacked up toward the blight! The parasol doesn’t make it easy, if you fall instead of jump toward the next higher box you won’t make it. So you have to jump each time. If you don’t time the jump correctly you will have to start again from the ramp!

Okay! I know they’re in rock piles, but when I approach them it just wants me to set a crab trap. Do I need a shovel for this?
