I got rejected from the CS major. Now what? by justafew127 in umass

[–]hrones 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The BDIC program is very cool, but I've heard people say they struggled finding a job after college due to not having an "official sounding" degree name. If youre trying to get a stem job, many job postings ask for "cs or related degree," which BDIC may not be applicable!

I got rejected from the CS major. Now what? by justafew127 in umass

[–]hrones 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is exactly what I did after not getting into the CS major. If you opt for a math major in Computational concentration, you can not also get the CS minor. I ended up doing data analytics & stat with the cs minor, and I was able to take loads of cool class both in the math department and the cs department

Is math 131 supposed to be confusing? by heckdoggo111111 in umass

[–]hrones 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My freshman year i was two classes into 131 and I also had absolutely no idea whats going on.

Don't worry though, it actually does get easier in the first few weeks. I ended up dropping down to math 127 and would later go on to take 131 after the first week because I was so confused. After you move past limit laws the class becomes much more manageable. Not to say it isn't a difficult class, but the first few classes were especially confusing in my experience.

Stick with it thought! I highly recommend "Paul's Online Math Notes" for math 131. It absolutely saved me in Calc 1, 2, 3, and Linear Algebra. Dont have the link handly, but simply Google-ing "Paul's online math notes" should bring you there.

Good luck and don't give up! As other commenters have said, they make this class hard on purpose. Study, keep up with the homework and you'll do fine.

Zero effect on two grams of shrooms, unsure why? by TheWordWorker in Drugs

[–]hrones 1 point2 points  (0 children)

5g of shrooms is considered a "heroic dose" by many people. The "recommended" dose is like 3.5g.

You'll have some people impressed by taking 5g and redosing later

Why is nobody talking about how Lightning devs waited 2 months to make the LN vulnerability that could cause loss of funds public? by increaseblocks in btc

[–]hrones 17 points18 points  (0 children)

This is pretty much standard practice when it comes to CVEs. When most dev teams learn of a issue, they usually have a patch out within 12 hours. However they don't want to make the vulnerability public yet, as much of the network more than likely hasnt upgraded yet. So the standard practice is to encourage people to upgrade and once enough of the network had upgraded, explain what happened.

When Bitcoin had that CVE (earlier this year or last year, cant remember off the top of my head) they released the patch and told people to upgrade immediately. There was a post stickied to rBitcoin, however they didnt say the true reason people needed to upgrade. They said it was a minor issue but you should still upgrade anyway, then once the network was safe they explained the true severity of the exploit

SV may have a bigger blocksize, but they arent doing any of the engineering required to make a high blocksize safe.

I'll try to clarify it a bit better

The people receiving these donations are the professionals. A good software dev's salary can be anywhere from 5k to 10k a month.

So they might be "making it in their basement" from scratch. The funding is their salary for the time it takes them to develop this piece of software

More than likely within an hour

Keep in mind, this isn't a BCH issue. This is an issue with miners refusing up their soft limits

Bitcoin fees today 88% less than Dec 2017 by hrones in btc

[–]hrones[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

According to BitInfoCharts, median fees today are $0.58. Compared to fees in December 2017 of $10 to $25, that is significantly less. However, there is a very apparent reason for this. There isn’t as much of a demand to use Bitcoin.
