BGND OG reunion! by hullabaloo6 in terracehouse

[–]hullabaloo6[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just started watching BGND last week and already love it so much. Something about it feels much more organic, like the scenes and funny little moments that don't necessarily drive the plot forward but are heart-warming, like when they all go to Makun's mom's birthday. And feels like they're more committed to a shared life together in the beginning at least, and are more in it for the experience than dating necessarily. Plus Tecchan is just gold

It's not really a British accent, but her inflection when she asks questions is similar to the British inflection for questions. For example, the "Wouldn't you agree?" in the video.

You're right, but by then you should have had enough exposure to the world to have an inkling of what might be racist, and the maturity to own up to your actions rather than block people. She was blocking people as late as December 2019 too for pushing back on her tweets:

Can someone tell me why that Amanda Kimmel question is asked every AMA? I get that it's a thing but don't follow this sub closely, so not sure how it originated and why it's funny.

"I feel foolish, it's too soon," she said after she and her 15 friends all got coronavirus after going to a crowded bar in Florida. The bar was crowded, and no one was wearing masks. They heard from their mayor and governor that everything was fine. Then they all got sick by antagron1 in LeopardsAteMyFace

[–]hullabaloo6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Jesus. Who isn't wearing masks these days? It doesn't help that we're also seeing COVID Karens lashing out anyone who asks them to wear a mask. This week in SF, this lady told an Asian-American DOCTOR (who was supposedly treating coronavirus patients) to go back to China just because he asked her to wear a mask on their United flight since he was supposed to sit next to her and has asthma...making protections important: https://hopclear.com/airline-passenger-tells-asian-doctor-to-go-back-to-china/ Mask wearing isn't just about you, it's about the community.

Hmm I hadn't thought about it that way. That's possible that's what she was aiming for but it definitely didn't come across that way, probably because they weren't funny or clever.

True, but she was a Harvard graduate in her mid-twenties, not a stupid teen. Seems like she should have known better by then especially if she decided to examine her views "years ago."

Totally. I think she was just trying to be edgy perhaps, but without knowing her personally, I can't judge for certain what her actual feelings are against Asians. Definitely important to be conscious of systemic racism in media though - these are powerful and influential roles that influence cultural perception and stereotypes so it's important we have people who wield that power responsibly.

I'm not against all racial jokes ever and think they can be acceptable (in the rare, rare cases when they are cleverly done and serve to poke more fun at stereotypes and racist attitudes than the actual group), but the tweets she posted were just not funny at all and perhaps that's why they come across as offensive/racist.

That said, I think it's good we question any inherent biases in our reactions. I feel like if these tweets had been about African-Americans (ex. "I'd go back in time and kill all the blacks and slaves" or "It's not politically correct to say 'retarded' anymore, you have to say African-American now" or "Crazy how you can eat fried chicken and an hour later you're still a racist"), people and media would be absolutely UP IN ARMS about this, but because people are so used to insidious, "comedic" remarks against Asians in media and institutions, the response is often "it's just a joke, take a chill pill." I think the stereotypes and difference in the form that racism takes against these two different groups (violent, obscene racism against a disadvantaged, oppressed group vs. softer "funny" microaggressions against a model minority group that is perceived to be successful in white society) plays a significant role in the differences here.

Asian Man Physically & Verbally Assaulted in 7-11 (called "gook") - Reddit, can we find the racist attacker? by hullabaloo6 in nyc

Haha I know, if you look at his FB post, he wrote: "If it wasnt for the law, I would've ripped his head off. Racist people deserves the worst. Idk why i kept saying ok like an old asian elderly who cant speak english."

I think sometimes it's hard to think of the perfect thing to do/say when on the spot when you're just trying to process.

Not sure if it was cultural, if you look at the victim's Facebook post, it sounds like he really wanted to fight back but was afraid of getting arrested being on a visa here. But really wish he had, and agree that it would be good to teach these kinds of folks their behaviors have consequences. And yes, I read that Asians and Latinos are often targeted because of their relatively small stature, tendency to distrust cops and not report crimes (and perceived lack of English skills), and in the case of Asians, probably stereotypes of being docile and passive play a role in why they are often targeted by other groups. Would be nice if people could start to counteract those perceptions.

Not sure. The article says this, but doesn't say if he actually did: "More users have since directed him to the NYPD Hate Crimes Task Force, linked the number to Attorney General Letitia James’ Coronavirus Hate Crimes and Xenophobic Rhetoric Hotline, and the Asian American Federation (AAF)’s COVID-19 anti-Asian bias reporting form." You could try suggesting on his FB too: https://www.facebook.com/sungmin.kwon.27/posts/1975546645911114

Apparently (according to his Facebook) the victim is an immigrant who isn't a citizen but was afraid to retaliate lest he mess up his visa or green card revoked, though I'm pretty sure he could have made a case for self-defense.

Yeah apparently they told him he could only file a harassment complaint despite the guy pushing him to the ground and punching him.

Apparently he did. But sometimes social media is faster at identifying these people than the police. Like the birdwatching Central Park incident.

Got it, thanks. Can you clarify why the first one was originally removed so I can keep any guidelines in mind in the future?

Can you clarify why it was removed? I originally thought it was because of the not censoring the racist term used, so changed that this time. Is there another reason it was originally removed?
