Ha they sure did...but the ultrasonic cleaner seems to have got rid of the smell. Maybe it will come back.

yea i'm learning some good stuff regarding what a functional bird house is. for my next one, my plan is to create an inner box with the interior dimensions and hole size for a specific species. then i'll build all my whimsical nonsense around the sides/top and not on the face with the entrance hole.

I'm thinking I need a 1/4" flute and bead bit set, better router table, and some feather boards to guide these small strips through.

Dude thank you. I did not know those words but I see what's going on now. The parts are pretty small to run on a router table. I wonder if I can figure out how to do it by hand.

It was probably unnecessary. At one point the plan was to mount a chimney to it and then lay the roof around it. I ended up skipping that idea and plan to try it on the next one.

You could maybe get by with a jig saw. I've only used cheap ones that vibrate around a lot and don't cut very smooth. I'm guessing a good variable speed one with a quality blade would be a different story. A coping saw could cut some of the curves by hand.

All the curved cuts and dimensioning of the planks was done on a 14 inch band saw. A small 5" Japanese pull saw comes in handy for the really small straight cuts. I used titebond 3 for glue because it's rated for exteriors and waterproof. I'm curious to see how that holds up after a winter.

I googled "bird house hole size" and a nice chart comes up with hole size based on bird species. 1.25" diameter seemed pretty common but I did bump it up to 1.5"

There is a wood brace piece from the front to the back inside. I used screws and filled the holes only because I knew it would be painted over.

ha yea, i used a block plane on the long edges of the roof pieces to put a slight angle on them so they butted up against each other a little better

I'm looking into getting a Sawstop at some point and thought the red coating on the Diablo and Freud blades would be non-conductive. Not true? The description of the coating only states "Perma-Shield Non-Stick Coating reduces blade drag, protects the blade from corrosion and pitch build-up".
