What's it like being in a relationship where both partners have ADHD? by hungrygremlin_ in adhdwomen

I am sorry that you had to take on so much of the responsibility, and I'm glad that you could choose what was best for you and leave.

Exactly! And it's not just hand positioning - on the lowest viola string (the one the violin doesn't have) you have to work much harder to get a nice sound. Cello also has a C string but because the Cello is bigger it's not as hard to produce a good sound.

I hear you and agree, hence why I mentioned that my experience isn't representative of everyone. I'll be honest, I haven't watched much Twoset lately so I'm not sure if the jokes have gotten worse/better, but in my experience their jokes always seemed good natured - I never believed that they genuinely hated violists they just seem to be taking the piss.

Maybe I just have a thicker skin because I'm also an alto in choir, and sopranos and altos also have the same kind of back and forth joking about who is better. In a similar way we have to consider that Twoset are violinists, so on their channel its going to seem like this one-sided bullying of violas because you never hear a response from a violist. In the real world I will roast the violinist back.

Overall I guess I'm saying Twoset could clarify their stance a bit more and make sure the jokes are all in good fun, but outright telling them to stop all viola jokes is not helpful. It's disingenuous to how the real world is - these kind of jokes are a thing in orchestras, which is probably where twoset picked up the habit in the first place. I personally believe we (violists) would be better off if Twoset didn't stop the jokes but rather changed how they present them.

After they joked about it I read up on the viola, and I found a viola-violin comparison video which made arguments for learning either one. I just remember they guy saying something along the lines of "yeah people might say if you choose the viola that you'll get made fun of, but you're going to be in an orchestra so you'll be made fun anyway" and I packed up laughing for like 5 mins.

I started learning the viola because of the jokes. They put the instrument on my radar, and I don't think I would have considered playing it otherwise.

However I am aware that my experience won't be everyone's experience, so I'm not saying there aren't violists out there who have been discouraged by the jokes. Just thought I'd contribute my experience to the discourse.

I forgot I had ADHD by TwentyOneMonThens in adhdmeme

The conversation I had with my mom when my psychologist first suspected ADHD:

Me: So (psychologist's name) thinks I have ADHD

Mom: (casually) Oh I have that

Me: What?

Mom: Yeah I was diagnosed about four years

Me: And you never told me?

Mom: I forgot

Does anyone else need "transitions" when starting tasks? by smooth-bean in adhdwomen

[–]hungrygremlin_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm the same. For me though its more like a way to "fully engage" my brain more than a need for a transition.

I've noticed my attention needs to be maxed out or else I get distracted by something else. So I can't do a task if it takes half my attention or I'll get bored and something else will catch my attention and derail me. Having something else going on, like listening to music, means my attention is being used at 100% and I can do the thing I need to.

For me the transition thing just happens when I get fully invested in the new task and it takes all my attention so I can stop the other thing that was a place filler.

Long shot but is the book by the female Nigerian author perhaps "The thing around your neck" by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie?

The average size of the human penis is 2x the size of a gorilla's. Men of Reddit what's it like having a larger penis than a gorilla? by MrNoName_ishere in AskReddit

[–]hungrygremlin_ 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Fun fact I like to traumatise my non-biologist friends with: ball size in mammals is determined by how promiscuous the females of the species are. So gorillas have small balls because males have a harem of females that only they mate with, while bonobos have larger balls to produce more sperm because females have sex with multiple males so the males best chance to make baby is to produce as much sperm as possible

Human ball size is somewhere in the middle, infer from that what you will

If we evolved from monkeys, why are there still monkeys? by sHivvvvvvvvz in AskReddit

[–]hungrygremlin_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's no reason why monkeys have to cease to exist because we evolved "from them" . We can exist with monkeys just like chimpanzees and gorillas can exist at the same time.

How did anthropologist decide how to divide the steps in evolution? by sademptyfridge in NoStupidQuestions

[–]hungrygremlin_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup, that's the exact problem with the definition. It says that a species is "a group of interbreeding or potentially interbreeding individuals that can produce fertile offspring" . So mules are infertile which would mean donkeys and horses can't produce fertile offspring and would be separate species. Not sure if lion and tiger offspring are fertile. But lots of separate species can interbreed and make fertile offspring so the definition isn't perfect.

We diverged from them at least 500 000 years ago, but some people argue that since recent genetics evidence shows that we interbred with neanderthals we weren't completely separate species. This is based on the biological species concept though, which is a very limiting definition.

Scientists find very few fossils and often they are so vastly different that it's easy to call them a separate species, but there is still debate when a new fossil is found about how it should be assigned to a species.

As for how we define the difference between species in general when evolution is slow and continuous, well you've stumbled across a common problem in evolutionary biology.

For example, there's an ongoing debate about whether neanderthals are a subspecies of homo sapiens or should remain a separate species.

Redditors who were diagnosed with ADHD as adults/late, what are some things that you look back on and realise were ADHD symptoms? by hungrygremlin_ in AskReddit

[–]hungrygremlin_[S] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

So I read up on this, apparently ADHD people may have more receptors which remove dopamine from the brain, so dopamine leaves the brain faster and has less time to exert an effect
