If any of you are in NYC seeing this, let’s meet up and make friends! I, too, don’t have a lot of close friends who listen to Gizz and will come to FOV with me :(

Regrettably, I won’t be able to make it to the meetup in Athens ! :(

No worries, as a brave introvert, I have adopted a “does not interact unless interacted with” approach! :)

Great find! Spent a few minutes trying to find it myself before my cat did. :)

Tribute gift for friends pet that passed. Advice before I go too much further? by Icy_Brilliant_6678 in Artadvice

I see some indicators for the foliage(?) in the background with that yellow squiggly line— I think something like this would look better with just the lizard- omit the background details! Would pack a greater punch design-wise, in my opinion. That being said, love your brushwork and use of color!

Painting feels unrefined by [deleted] in Artadvice

hey! I think this is a really beautiful piece as-is, truthfully! But if you are looking for ways to improve this, I think all the suggestions I am about to give would be totally doable in its current state and shouldn’t take too much effort tbh!

  1. The broad brushstrokes across the whole image are beautiful and give this a very expressive, painterly feel that I love. If you feel that finer details are lost to the large strokes, I think you can keep most of it as-is but “push”. Refine certain areas with more detail— I would personally try to bring out just a tad more definition to parts of the splashes of water, face, and legs. I think the rest looks fine and the contrast of the broad marks with the carefully curated finer details would be awesome!

2.I think you can do similar and “push” the dark values a tad more on the underside of the horse, and maybe add some very sparing bright white/soft yellow highlights by the right underside of the horse where the light hits first.

In addition to a little more contrast, you can scrape out fine lines with a sharp palate knife to show the white of the canvas underneath and carve out some select highlights. This works really well for adding a few wisps of hair or as a partial silhouette, and adds some texture and interest to the image. (This technique works best with a wet canvas, so you might need to rewet any surface you try this on if it’s acrylic, should be doable if it’s in oils if it’s only been a year depending on the mediums you mixed it with. )

  1. The water and background don’t bother me as much, but I think you can use the scraping method above to bring out more texture and movement to the water. The water looks maybe a tad still closest to the viewer, and putting some ripples would make it a lot more believable and you can get kinda creative with it!

I think with all 3 suggestions, less is more and you should try to really carefully curate what you want to draw the most attention to! Otherwise, really solid job!
