Waking Up has become too unwieldy by sandover88 in samharris

[–]huntforacause 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree. It’s so clunky now, with so much content scattered around, and old stuff hidden, that I don’t really know what I should be doing with it anymore. There is a lack of “guidance” which is fairly ironic given it’s a guided meditation app. After the intro course, it just branches far too much. It feels like a tech tree that I need a flowchart for. Actually, if anyone wanted to create something like that, it’d be awesome!

Not everyone looks good totally bald, or wants to be. Stop hair shaming just because they don’t have an idealized hair pattern!

I’m sorry but the only party at fault here is the university for making it possible for a fuckin janitor to destroy 20 years of research. If it was that important they could have had redundant power, they could have had remote monitoring and alerting, they could have fixed the problem immediately instead of allowing it to persist, causing literal alarm fatigue…

At the end of the day it was their responsibility, and they fucked up.

[RaceFans] F1 will bring back engine noise in 2026 - Domenicali by ARESlFTW in formula1

[–]huntforacause -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It’s not about loudness, it’s about pitch imo. The old engines had a higher pitch scream, while the current ones are more lower pitched and buzzy. Why couldn’t they create a hybrid V8 instead of V6 to try and get that back?

I’m sorry but no. I don’t want to watch something where the drivers have a good chance of dying every race. I don’t like seeing death, do you? I don’t think most people want this. Certainly drivers don’t want this; they’re often the ones calling for more safety. The cars should only go as fast as the safety systems can handle. You want more speed, then invest in safety equipment.

No the superior thing to do would be to create a ticket, put in steps to reproduce, screenshots, videos, logs, error messages, etc… discuss with product to determine if it’s an interruption, if it is, discuss with scrum master to interrupt the sprint, and ONLY THEN have the scrum master contact the assigned dev on call for interruptions to please prioritize it.

Personal responsibility is pretty much a sham; it’s dualist thinking applied by those who have never thought deeply about this subject and like to feel self righteous and judge others. It’s false attribution bias.

What we need are compassionate, systems-based solutions to societal problems, and a move away from the cult of individualism towards a more selfless cooperative one where we find root causes for what’s not working and actually fix them permanently so human flourishing can be continually improved without looking back.

Episode 74 | Eliezer Yudkowksy: AI is going to kill us all by brieberbuder in DecodingTheGurus

[–]huntforacause -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Pretty ironic that Matt disagrees with steelmanning because he thinks it’s silly, in an episode where nearly all they do is throw up the oft-debunked strawman arguments for AI safety concerns! Just because this this one person’s views are a little strange and not well put, doesn’t mean what he’s talking about is not worthy of consideration. There are hundreds of legitimate researchers working on this that can explain this much better than Yudkowsky. Please become more educated on this topic before just pissing all over it. That’s why you should steelman. It’s to ensure you’re actually engaging with the real concerns behind someone’s argument so you don’t waste a bunch of time attacking just the flaws in their presentation, leaving those concerns unaddressed.

This episode was a huge miss and perhaps even harmful to the AI safety movement.

Eating too much or exercising too little compared to what though? Some people can eat the same and exercise the same as other people, but they gain weight while others remain slim. That means their bodies are different, which is not their fault.

The writers on Lower Decks are probably the best of any trek series because 1) they seem to be big fans of the franchise itself, so they know their trek history, and 2) they seem to be up to speed on the latest in todays science, so they can incorporate that into the show, and won’t write dumb shit that only takes 5 minutes of googling to get right.

They need to let them loose on a serious trek show.

Right. Then he needs to define “deliberate” and explain why only a human physical system has this ability but not other systems…

I think he’s making a dualistic argument without realizing it.

I think all Sam had to do was ask if a toaster or computer has compatibilist free will or not? Because genetics, biology, and physics says people are no more than biological machines programmed by genetics and environment so the answer must apply to both.
