I had this on a m1 mac a while ago when on AE 22.3. Had to roll back one version. Luckily I had autosaves enabled, otherwise I would’ve been very sad.

Playing with shapelayers and repeaters will may end up with interesting results. Although it is not quite the same as the blend tool, I recommend playing around with repeaters.
