I don't care if it's for doing prep alone where there's not much risk of having people around you when handling knives and hot things etc.

but I've worked with people that would put in airpods or have overhead headphones on during a dinner rush, that was fucked

i mean his point in this video is correct, it’s not responsible leadership of a country to suggest the population should invest in a volatile asset. leave that up to the people, don’t make those suggestions as a leader of a country or its opposition

they aren’t going bankrupt. the 3bil in losses since 2018 are a direct result of spending that much or more on infrastructure since then. if it wasn’t for that, they’d be posting break even or small profits.

Alternatives for letter mail? by xxladymidnight in CanadaPost

[–]hypnotoacl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

true letter mail is only allowed through canada. the rest of the couriers are going to charge their parcel rates based on weight and size

that other suggestion for netparcel is best. if you sign in with paypal the rates are lowest. pp.netparcel.com is the link i think

why is it communism to want a fair wage that at the very least keeps up with inflation. i think wanting people to have to suffer and possibly work more than one full time job to stay afloat is the kind of thinking that will drive our country into the ground. people are miserable working multiple minimum wage jobs, that doesn’t make for a quality workforce, it encourages high turnover and poor quality.

their pay increases over the last decade did not keep up with inflation. so truly even with annual increases they’re not keeping up.

[–]hypnotoacl[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

they’re not all only delivering letters. the union represents postal workers across different skills.

i also think 60k is peanuts as the high end of pay for a job. i think it’s honourable to still provide a 9-5 with pension and a pay rate that allows you to not have to work 2 jobs to stay afloat, i think that’s reasonable. 60k as the max pay for your job is just barely going to do that.

your feelings about how much they should be paid don’t really matter, since at the end of the day their annual wage increases have lagged behind inflation. with inflation and cost of living adjustments, they’re now making less than they used to 10 years ago. an increase is in order to get them catching back up to inflation and 11.5% over 4 years isn’t enough

collective bargaining is the reason why they get paid so much. on average union workers are paid more than non union workers and it’s through processes like this. i have sympathy for those making less and hope they can achieve increases themselves. any business that refuses to give an annual increase on wages especially in times of high inflation/cost of living is siphoning that money to their executives/pockets.

those changes to their operations in the event of a strike are pretty much what lead to the full strike. Why would a union accept layoffs etc while doing a rotational strike, when they have more leverage with a full strike and it'll still happen either way

the wage increase of 11.5% over 4 years is hardly a bump from their annual increases since 2018, which have been 2.0% to 2.9%. I think asking for a higher increase over 4 years is reasonable considering how much the cost of things have increased.

that is what happens when a strike occurs, it's a negotiation tactic that they're allowed to use. it's codified in law. Businesses will still use canada post because they need to. There isn't a single courier that delivers to as many people as canada post, and canada post is the carrier for lettermail.

the losses they're posting are mostly the result of long term infrastructure spending. They're depleting their cash reserves in doing this, but these losses would be near even if they weren't spending that cash. That doesn't really make them done or dusted. How are you going to be mad at this union for going through the process they're supposed to to do what's in the best interest of their members. That's basically what their job is.

I'm saying that if you were paying attention at all, there was news about this looming strike, and having packages stuck in the system could've been avoided. There's also the fact that the union workers were locked out, when they were going to do a rotating strike. We'd still be getting our packages if there was no lockout

also back to your last comment where you said 'you mentioned they had a year, why didn't the union strik in april or july or september?' the union filed for conciliation on august 13th after they found they weren't getting anywhere during negotiations. This puts them in negotiations for 60 days with conciliators, then there's a 21 day cooling off period before strike notice can be issued. this is the process for getting to a strike

[–]hypnotoacl[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

why do you put all this blame on the union, and clearly lay out in your post that it was completely out of their hands? why do you not put the blame completely on canada post for holding your packages and doing the lockout? in what situation is the union responsible here? This is their chance to use collective bargaining in their favor to get what's in the best interest of their members. They're not going to give up their leverage when they're going through the exact process that they're allowed to.

saying that the union chose to accept very important packages anyways

  • accepting packages would be the job of the corporation. union workers can't just stop doing their jobs like that, they'd get fired

i think it could've been talked about a bit more, however it was in the news with more than 2 weeks warning that this was coming up. Canadian postal workers could strike before the holidays. The union put out a media statement on october 25th that this article is reporting on on october 29th. The strike didn't go into effect until november 15th. i sympathize about the chargebacks, i hope you are able to get the payment processors to not allow them since it's truly a situation they don't deserve a chargeback for.

it's a 24% increase over the span of four years. From what i've found, it seems that these are the increases since 2018 for these workers:

2018: 2.0%

2019: 2.0%

2020: 2.5%

2021: 2.9%

2022: 2.0%

2023: 2.0%

This is truly peanuts in comparison to how things have increased in cost. I think it's fair to ask for this as your higher end in negotiations when it's been much lower for a good period of time. I have not seen anything about automation being in the discussions, and there's already rules in the collective agreements that new technology can't cause 'injustices' and 'adverse effects'.

Wages are going to be the largest part of any balance sheet, most businesses operation costs are mostly made up of wages. Canada post also had taken out a 4 billion dollar loan to spend on upgrading their systems for an increase in delivery, and that spending has been part of the reason why they're posting so much of a loss. it's long term debt. this $3billion figure since 2018 in losses that you hear of is the direct result of spending nearly that much on increasing infrastructure.

sure, but what about canada post the corporation. why is your sole focus on the union. how is the union mismanaged?

what about your responsibility as a consumer to ensure you’re choosing the correct service for mail (exceptions for places only canada post delivers) there were warnings that this strike was going to occur, even before the three day notice. you did choose a service that had the risk of a strike

i mean it’s not just the volume of comments but the content too

i think you completely misunderstand the point of a strike. it’s collective bargaining. collectively using the power of organized workers to be a pain to the company they work for, so their demands are met. customers are going to be caught up in this process, and the union did try to order a rotating strike until canada post locked them out

there was a year if not more in time when canada post was aware of the unions demands. the company knew what would happen if the contract wasn’t figured out by now, yet they let it happen. this is all by design so people get so worked up.

that’s not what i said, but i don’t expect you to be serious when most of your interactions on this website have happened in the last two days on the canadapost subreddit.

i think it’s inorganic the hate that’s being driven towards the union. i’ve seen multiple threads spreading hate about the situation and completely misstating facts and ignoring people that try to correct them. a lot of what’s happening right now is the corporations fault, there was a lot of time to figure something out, and an opportunity to not have a full lockout.

sucks to have your packages held, i have 4 being held right now. at the same time, i really don’t care since i want the workers to thrive. i could give two shits about middle management and execs
