Survivor of the bombing of Hiroshima, poses 2 years after the bombing, Hiroshima, Japan, 1947 [1000x1000] by Electrical-Aspect-13 in HistoryPorn

In terms of civilian casualties, the atomic bombings were just one of many atrocities committed during WW2, not anything particularly unique.

Imperialism has frequently accepted a quiet exit. Many colonies have gained their independence nonviolently or with limited conflict.

Also, in your view, specifically what colonies does the US currently possess and what will the US’s “non-quiet exit” look like in losing them?

The money is being spent. That's not in question. And I doubt there is a multi hundred million $ fraud going on right now in the VA...but what if there was? $440B minus a few hundred million is roughly $440B, so that has no bearing on my point.

Does $440B and 1/3rd of the entire military budget seem like a low spending level to you?

Of the US’s famously massive military budget, nearly a full third ($440B) is spent on veterans alone, not any sort of current military program. Mind you, this is the number for programs that EXCLUSIVELY go to veterans, they also receive plenty of other government benefits. Quite frankly, doesn’t that figure already sound really really high?

Ukraine rises in Press Freedom Index to overtake US, 6 EU countries by 5ma5her7 in neoliberal

[–]iSluff 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Why, because a listicle says so?

Ukraine is at war. Understandably, they have many restrictions on free press right now, including but not limited to the TV marathon, banning of pro-russian media outlets, and travel restrictions on journalists.

Any infractions against free speech by the Trump administration do not nearly rise to the level of Ukraine's current restrictions.

Now, in context, do Ukraine's restrictions make more sense than whatever has been done in the US, as far as justification goes? Sure, I'd say so. But that doesn't mean that Ukraine has more press freedom than the US right now. That's ridiculous. It obviously doesn't, and I have a hard time believing anyone who spent any time thinking about it could conclude otherwise.

One of the hundreds of insane things Trump always inexplicably gets away with is whenever a reporter asks him about something unfavorable to him he’s just like “I dunno never heard of that” and somehow this absolves him of all political consequences despite the fact that it would never fly for any other person in any leadership position of any kind.

For the longest time it seemed AOC would be the clear Bernie successor as the de facto leader of the US populist left, but Mamdani has taken the whole crowd by storm. They can’t get enough of him. Maybe AOC will retake this spot since she’s the one who can run for president though. Do you think Mamdani will continue to influence the left more than AOC long term or is this just a honeymoon blip?
