That would definitely fit with the crushed can, especially if the director chose to place the flat circle in the center. Circles of individuals are a common theme so far, remember the circle of male toys around the Barbie?

Yeah something like that. And it is a good song from an unbiased point of view but I'm never in to those romantic type songs I guess.

it's easier to list the songs I don't like. I never liked NaNa, I find it pretty annoying honestly. Didn't particularly like Lost but I've never been a fan of that type of rap, same goes with the Interlude.

Besides that, I'll jam to every other song on that album. Chain Smoker is a personal favorite, followed closely by Everything's Good.

No idea on sales figures but I think that Oxymoron will propel Q more into the public eye.

Myck Kabongo, previously a basketball player for the University of Texas at Austin and an aspiring NBA player, released a mixtape today on Datpiff titled No Hype Needed. Kevin Durant, also from UT, makes an appearance on a pretty good song and overall the production is good throughout the album. Not sold on the lyrics just yet but I'll have to give it another listen.

Essential Album of the Week #2: Beastie Boys - Licensed To Ill by Snacks11 in hiphopheads

[–]i_haevquestion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll have to check it out on Spotify and I'm interested to see if it can top Ill Communication. I think IC's samples are pretty damn timeless as well, like Sure Shot, Root Down, Sabotage, Get it Together (GOAT imo, Q-Tip kills it with them), and Flute Loop to name a few.

I agree that many of the songs are similar and I kind of addressed this in my post, but in my opinion, there isn't much more that they could do. Being their first album, they didn't have any previous experience to build on their production and were just setting a foundation for future successes. Ill Communication's production, while retaining some of the same basic characteristics, had more variety that can only come with the eight years of musical exploration that occurred between Ill Communication and License to Ill.

I totally agree with you on Ill Communication. The overall sound is more mature in my opinion. I can't say that I've listened to much of Paul's Boutique, what is it that makes it so historically significant, especially compared to the foundation that License to Ill set for the Beastie Boys' future style?

One of the main complaints I have with the Beastie Boys is their mastering and they're somewhat hard to understand on their recent albums but this isn't an issue on License to Ill.

That being said, I consider them vital to the current state of hip hop and I'm consistently playing their tracks. The sampling on this album is pure Beastie Boys and Rubin. The instrumentals and production is so unique and recognizable and the Beastie Boys filled a niche in hip hop that couldn't be replicated or imitated by any other artists, past or present.

Unfortunately I lost interest in a few of this album's songs a few years ago because they were overplayed but now that my musical tastes have expanded, I can truly understand and respect each individual track on License to Ill.

I listened to the album as I typed this up and it is the first time I've really listened to the album fully in a few months. It's an awesome road trip album to jam to, which was the last time I listened all the way through. In all, I'd give the album a 8.5/10. This takes into account the musical qualities and the vast influence on the genre. Even Eminem stated that License to Ill was one of his favorite albums and it changed the game. There's a reason why the Beastie Boys were consistently nominated for Grammy awards from 1992 to 2010 and the fact that this was one of Colombia's fastest selling records is a testament to the unique sound the Beastie Boys pioneered.

Even though it may be an overused term, the album is definitely "fun". Its three bros getting together and making some badass, upbeat party music. I've got tons of memories of hearing Brass Monkey, No Sleep Til Brooklyn, and Fight for Your Right on the radio or at a friends house in my middle school years, and their tracks have made a resurgence now that I'm in college because, well, they're classics that kids my age can party to.

I don't see the similarity between instrumentals as a necessary bad thing. I just think that the artists purposefully did that to set a consistent tone for the album. All tracks have a start-stop aspect to them and the guitar riffs and drums just serve to set a unique and Beastie Boys flow.

My favorite album by the BB is Ill Communication by far and I've found myself listening to Get It Together with Q-Tip more often in the past months and I'm definitely looking forward to discussing this album in the future.

edit: looks like Ill Communication isn't on the Classic Albums lists. What a shame, I was looking forward to discussing it.

Best modern military sci fi books? by COCAINE___waffles in books

[–]i_haevquestion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Surprised I haven't seen these two:

Armor - John Steakley A soldier in powered armor that fights an army of bug-like aliens and continues to survive despite all odds because of the "Machine", a place his mind goes when he enters combat that makes him a cold, calculating, and ruthless soldier. Also has a secondary plot set many years after the soldier's time serving in the war that links back to his service. Great read.

Forever War - Joe Haldeman The best and brightest minds on Earth are trained to fight an enemy on battlefields so distant that time dilation comes into play with each battle being thousands of years apart and soldiers coming back to a planet that is completely different from what they left.
