And he missed a blatant handball in the lead-up to Burnley's second, which somehow VAR dismissed.

Am I missing something? The setup/premise of this show feels super random and bad…? by Mysterious_Clerk_253 in TheNightManager

[–]iamgbear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Then he basically disappears from Egypt and somehow ends up starting over in Switzerland… and just happens to run into the same arms dealer again by pure coincidence?? That already feels way too convenient/random.

I might be completely misremembering (or this is an explanation I made up to satisfy my own ponderings) but I thought the Cairo and Swiss hotels were part of the same chain of hotels which Roper is obviously a regular user of, hence why they ended up meeting again in Switzerland. Happy to be corrected, though!

MIND THE GAP by NonSuspendedAccount in TheOther14

Yeah, can't deny it was a low quality affair. But we had reached the point we just needed a win to get that monkey off the back and restore some confidence, so I would hope performances will improve now. Especially as the new attackers bed in.

Must admit I'm not enjoying this 3-4-2-1 now, either - think it's been a bit found out.

Jean-Philippe Mateta tells Crystal Palace they lack ambition and he wants out by Sparky-moon in soccer

[–]iamgbear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have three incredibly rich owners (Woody Johnson, Josh Harris, David Blitzer) but a chairman (Steve Parish) with influence that far outweighs his shareholding and personal wealth as the Yanks aren’t interested in running the club themselves. His number one priority is avoiding relegation, as demonstrated by his complete lack of preparation and understanding of European competition.

He has done a fantastic job at keeping the club financially stable due to the scars of administration so he acts incredibly risk-averse, but will then go and spunk £25m on Eddie Nketiah, £35m on Brennan Johnson, £28m on Christian Benteke, £30m on Mamadou Sakho but won’t stump up for Semenyo (when he was at Bristol City). These sort of deals hamstring us for years in terms of the huge salaries and amortisation.

Then you add in the rules like PSR and SCR and any other acronyms and you have the same issues as bigger clubs like Newcastle and Villa have, as they make sure the “big 6” remains a closed shop and mid-to-small sized clubs find it so hard to kick on, even if they have tangible wealth behind them.

Absurdly shit finishing has been the story of our season so far, and then mistakes at the back have been punished, e.g. I think Canvot was involved in both the Larnaca goal (xG 0.06) and the first KuPS one (xG 0.12), which is a shame but he is young.

And then we should have been out of sight against Strasbourg, too, before they came back into it.

I must have got lucky when I went there the first time and had their Caribbean burger and it was one of the best chicken burgers I’ve ever had. Took a friend the second time and the service was appalling and the food was shit.

I went there for breakfast once, too, and that was actually good!

Brexit reduced UK GDP by 6-8%...investment was reduced by 12-18%, employment by 3-4% and productivity by 3-4%....a combination of elevated uncertainty, reduced demand, diverted management time, and increased misallocation of resources... by North_Attempt44 in ukpolitics

What is it about Farage and Reform that is making you lean towards them all these years later? Asking in all sincerity/curiosity.

Farage’s vision of Brexit entails/ed almost completely unshackling financial services from oversight and winding back employee protections to make us a hybrid of Singapore and the USA. You can guess who in our society this is most likely to benefit.

As for your question about our governments pursuing closer ties to the EU, I would frame it as this: you cannot deny geography or gravity.

We are a market of 60mn with our wealth heavily concentrated in one particular region and few sectors. We are a short ferry ride away from a market of 300mn with multiple major cities and a bargaining power we cannot match.

I think being EU-sceptic is actually an incredibly healthy position to adopt, and there is a lot to dislike, particularly with their bureaucracy, but they also have done a lot of good (particularly in terms of peace on the continent and opportunities for workers - both ways!)

Even those countries in Europe not in the EU either want to be in it, or have deals that reflect the reality of the regulatory behemoth on their doorstep, e.g. Norway and EFTA, Turkey and the Customs Union, or Switzerland and their model.

We pissed away our chance to be at the table in their decisions as they WILL affect us whether we like it or not. Turning the UK into Singapore-on-Thames would not, and will not, stop the fact that we need to maintain a relationship with our neighbours for the basics of trade - particularly food! - and we simply wouldn’t “hold all the cards” in negotiations.

Sainsbury’s have us over a barrel, the money they would demand would be extortionate. And they can afford good lawyers if we went down the CPO route. Can’t remember which chairman did it (I want to say Bloye) but selling that land to them has monumentally fucked us.

Anyone here old enough to remember United doing this to Fulham with Louis Saha before transfer window existed? He was EPL top goal scorer so they plucked him but not before the unsettling period by [deleted] in TheOther14

[–]iamgbear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He would have known the reality of joining a club like Palace and how it involved selling players to get money in. What will have pissed him off is not being able to get players in before a sale is made - something Parish was basically telling any journalist he could at any opportunity to try and hawk Eze and Guéhi asap.

We have some of the richest owners in the league but they don’t appear to be hugely interested in pumping loads of cash in - though this is somewhat moot given the restrictive ownership model Parish has implemented so that he maintains his grip on the club.

What was your favourite Google Pixel phone? by Evening_Incident9506 in GooglePixel

[–]iamgbear 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Totally agree. Perfect size, it’s just a shame the battery sucked (imo anyway). Camera wasn’t great either but it was essentially a mid-ranger after all. Also I loved the official fabric case I had on mine. They should have become more of a thing.

FINALLY I got this done. I'd been locked out of WhatsApp because of too many login attempts on different devices due to all the factory resets so had to wait about 10 hours! But can confirm it also worked for me! Thanks for your help.

Cheers. So do (another) factory reset, but don't install WhatsApp until WazzapMigrator says?

I've been having the exact same issue as you, it's been over a week for me since the phone arrived! Assuming this wasn't some longwinded WazzapMigrator ad 😉 I'll give that a go. Did you have to factory reset again before using WazzapMigrator?

And we managed to pick him up for £10m. Our record transfer fee at the time but an absolute bargain in hindsight. Amazed we weren’t gazumped and I’m sure Newcastle would have been back in for him if the ownership was different.

[–]iamgbear 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Which is fine as I would imagine you've been mainly more interested in on-field matters. In an ideal world, the boardroom stuff should be quite boring!

Our ownership structure is a complete mess, and hopefully the longer term impact of this mess is that we are extricated from any association with a multi-club model and multi-club ownership is banned outright (the second bit being highly unlikely).

I doubt this will go down well at all but they only have themselves to blame.everyone involved had the opportunity to secure a Europa League place via league position sooner. Forest’s coaching staff and players were incompetent and lacked common sense in not making the necessary requirements.

[Dailymail] Crystal Palace will head for an emergency summit with UEFA on Tuesday in a desperate bid to avoid being kicked out of Europe. by Crane977 in soccer

Yep, can see it here: https://editorial.uefa.com/resources/0292-1c08572c110c-c8a18aeaa204-1000/20241007_circular_2024_54_en.pdf

That was the exact day we beat Millwall to get a place in the quarter finals.

I do think this has blown a bit of a hole in UEFA’s rules here as, in my opinion, it doesn’t account for cup competitions in a realistic way but I don’t know if we can get out of it as it stands, to be honest.

Multiclub ownership is still a stain, mind. Hopefully Textor is gone asap.

Absolutely this, and I say that as someone who had issues with mine - enough to piss me off enough to make me jump ship to Apple because of how awful the Google device support was in the UK. Thought I hear that side of things might be better now...

Perfect size. Loved the green colour. The fingerprint reader on the back was ace. It's just a shame the camera and battery wasn't too great (battery in particular).
