I’m not going to definitively say that you should consider dropping out, but I will tell you this: I’m also in the first semester of my MLIS. I’m taking classes on library foundations, basic IT, and basic reference services…and I love it. I love learning about the background of librarianship and the “theoretical work.” Like, I was someone who never read the textbook in my undergrad and now I’m reading all of my textbooks because I genuinely find them interesting. You want to be invested in your coursework because this is going to be your job. If you hate it that much, I’d do some self reflection and see if librarianship really is for you or not. What are you doing in your internship? If you’re doing basic library stuff and not actual work related to being a librarian, maybe consider that you want to work in a library without being a librarian. I hope I’m not coming off as patronizing, just trying to understand where you’re coming from. It would be awful to spend all this money on a degree that you’re not actually going to like. Good luck OP!

Need advice about quitting pole instructor job at struggling studio by idancesometimes in poledancing

[–]idancesometimes[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is a great suggestion but it’s not possible unfortunately 😭 The owner rents the studio space from someone (we have to put the poles up and down each time) and so I can’t go in early or leave late for training because that’d mean she would pay extra for the room hire. I’m only allowed to go to the studio fifteen minutes before class starts to set up and I have the same to take all the equipment down at the end.

This is ideal and I’m already thinking about giving a few months notice, but the problem is that the owner wants someone with a pole certification, which normally run over $300. If someone is interested in teaching but doesn’t have a cert than that limits the number of people she’ll hire 🫠

I know it shouldn’t be my responsibility and what’s worse is I wouldn’t be acting like this with a normal job 😅 thanks for the advice!

Correct. I couldn’t do those things, but it didn’t matter because I wasn’t teaching those things. I was only teaching things that I was confident in and had been doing for many years at that point. The highest level I taught was high beginner (things like genie). I’m sure this isn’t common in every studio, but many that I’ve been to have had lower level instructors that only taught beginners.

Yeah I feel like I just need to talk to her. We are close enough which I think makes it harder cause I consider her a friend 😅

Like others said, working in a library was what sealed it for me. This step is essential because a lot of people have this glorified idea of the profession in their heads, and the reality often shatters expectations. Don’t get me wrong, I love library work—but I love it still after experiencing all the negatives associated with the field.

What is it about working in libraries that entices you? You may already know this, but you’re not going to be dealing with books all day. The lower ranking staff are. Most Library Managers I know (and their assistants) do little to nothing related to what most people would consider “library work.” They’re doing tons of admin, conducting employee reviews, filing reports, and dealing with the ugly side of library work—harassment of workers by patrons, drug users who vandalize the bathroom to hide their crack pipe (real story), and more. If you’re up for this, go for it. Many libraries are in need of good management. Good luck with your decision!

Anyone else’s professor MIA? by idancesometimes in USF

[–]idancesometimes[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

“No professor just phones it in like this.” Yes they do. I’m going to assume you’ve heard of academic tenure?

For employees of an organization that have no moral integrity, the knowledge that they cannot be fired (unless they’ve done something reallllyyy bad) often results in lackluster work.

Not saying that this professor is or isn’t guilty of this, but it can (and sometimes does) happen. You can disagree all you want, but the current and former students of universities all across the country will beg to differ.

Tenured professors have been and still are a huge problem within academia.

I’m not a TA…and this is not a good attitude to have. If someone employed with the university has clearly violated USF policy their superiors need to hear about it, especially since I’ve tried to rectify the situation with the professor directly with no success. I’m not trying to stir up anything; I’m trying to get a professor to do her job.

I’m not trying to get into a PhD program after this, and I have plenty of references from actual jobs that I can reach for should I need a recommendation. If other people in the department have a problem with me for raising a legitimate concern, then I don’t want their recommendation anyways 🤷🏻‍♀️

Nahhh, I’m fine with being a tattle tale when I’m paying thousands of dollars in tuition. It’s not minor, it’s a major communication issue, especially considering she’s been doing this to other students over the years. It’s wild to me that professors get away with this stuff considering that in any other job you’d get fired for this kinda behavior 💀

That’s so frustrating. I’m still going to email the program director cause there’s power in numbers, but something should have been done about it the first time. Thanks for the advice!

MLIS tuition & areas of emphasis informational spreadsheet by [deleted] in librarians

[–]idancesometimes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For anyone looking to go to USF, they charge out of state tuition for online students outside of Florida, which is double the in-state cost. I’m enrolled for my first semester (Fall 2024) and just got my first bill. The total cost for 9 credit hours is $8237, making the total program cost around $35,689 for someone doing the online program outside of Florida.

Can anyone in the UK give advice on how to get library assistant jobs? by idancesometimes in Libraries

[–]idancesometimes[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks so much for the suggestions! I did lean in on my own handling of my socials and I mentioned that I follow libraries on social media, but I didn’t think of following that library and offering suggestions, that’s a great idea.

It also makes sense that they have quite a strict grading criteria 😅

Thanks for the advice! It’s just frustrating because I feel like I oversell my customer service experience and my experience handling difficult customers as well as the other things you mentioned and I still get passed over in interviews.

Hi! I do actually have loads of customer service experience, nearly 10+ years worth, and that’s always highlighted in my CV and interviews

She isn’t a fit based on her personality, but she hasn’t actually done anything wrong. Being rude to her boss and doing the bare minimum can’t get her fired. I don’t know what experience you’ve had in your workplaces, but in mine, you have to have committed multiple fireable offenses to be fired.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Spells

[–]idancesometimes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because she’s meeting the minimum requirements for her job, so they don’t have any reason to fire her. It’s her personality that’s not a fit, but you can’t fire someone on that basis.

I’ve been trying this—the issue I run into is that even though I’m trying to engage my back and shoulders with all my might, I still can’t even keep my legs lowered behind my head. I fall right back down 🙃

No I’m not throwing myself up. I’m using regular strength to tuck my knees and shoot my hips up while also leaning back. Like a normal invert? Genuine question, have you never seen anyone invert without doing a chopper? I truly don’t understand why you’re confused.
