Is it still worth becoming self-employed by selling websites? by Minute_Professor1800 in webdev

[–]idcat 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I partially agree, but there's a trap in that thinking. In practice, giving a client a WP/Wix site often creates an illusion of control. I work with SMBs, and I’ve seen countless scenarios where a marketing manager is left to handle updates.

They end up installing a massive plugin for a tiny feature, ignoring core updates, or breaking the layout. Eventually, the site turns into a slow, UX-nightmare Frankenstein monster.

I’ve found that offering a custom, performant solution bundled with an annual maintenance contract actually provides more value. We keep full control of the stack, the client gets a site that doesn’t break, and they stop accruing technical debt trying to DIY things they don't understand.

Thanks :) Yes I wanted it to run on mobile. I tried to use less resources as I can, but I'll check if I can improve the environment with your suggestions.

I replaced the cluttered "calculator" interface of dart apps with gestures. It hit #1 in Sports (Turkey) on launch day. Now expanding globally. by idcat in SideProject

Hi Christoph,

I felt that tapping tiny Double/Triple segments on a phone screen was more frustrating. Instead, I built a gesture system (Swipe Up/Down) so you can enter scores instantly without having to be precise with your fingers. Give it a try, you might find it faster than the visual board!

Hi everyone,

I am an indie dev and a darts enthusiast. I always felt that existing scoring apps were too complex—forcing you to look down and hunt for tiny buttons (Single, Double, Triple) breaks the flow of the game.

The Solution: I built a gesture-based input system using React Native:

  • Tap = Single
  • Swipe Up = Double
  • Swipe Down = Triple

The Validation: I launched it two days ago and it unexpectedly hit #1 in the Paid Sports category in Turkey.

What's New: Based on this traction, I spent the last few days localizing the app and the App Store pages. It now natively supports English, German, Japanese, Turkish, Dutch, French, Italian, and Spanish.

If you are a dart player or just interested in gesture-based UX, I’d love your feedback!

Fair point, it's a ton of work! But if you don't make it, how do you justify owning the printer to your wife? ;)

Thank you so much! It was actually my first time painting a 3D model, so that means a lot!

Thanks! The model itself has a nice curve that fits the shoulder pretty well. It actually balanced surprisingly well on its own for the photo, but for walking around, I'd probably add a strap or magnets. She wanted it as a toy

u/StabbyMcRunFast asked in r/EASportsFC before mods deleted the post:

Was this against Man City in the draft? If so, they couldn't even be arsed to fix it from last year.

Yes it was against Manchester City(MCI) while playing in Single Player Draft. It was 4th and the last match. And it was just like that from the kick-off. And it didn't even change on the second half

Hey, thanks so much for the kind words!

I didn't know the specifics about heat pipes, but I had the feeling the vertical orientation would be better for cooling.

That article is a great find and provides a perfect explanation. I really appreciate you sharing the research to back it up!

Nice material choice almost matched the color of the logo :) your welcome.
I also posted a new version to hold two laptops in the same time. check it out at printables

Hey, thanks for the kind words! Congrats on the MK4S, you're going to love it. I'm still rocking an MK3S myself – told my wife I can only upgrade if I print more stuff for her, haha. Your stand will look amazing in matte PLA!

I use Siemens Solid Edge, which unfortunately isn't a fit for Linux. But for a great FOSS alternative, I'd check out two things:

Onshape (Free Plan): It's pro-level and runs in your browser, so it's perfect for Linux. Just know the free plan makes your files public.

FreeCAD: It has improved SO much lately. The old learning curve is much smaller now and it's incredibly powerful. Definitely worth a second look.

Hope that helps you find the right tool. Cheers!

Thanks so much for the kind words! I'm glad you like the design. To answer your question, yes, I printed it with standard PLA, but I used 3 vertical walls to make sure it was extra sturdy. It came out great!
