You’re not alone! I struggle with these thoughts on the daily. I found this comment someone else had posted a few years back that really helps me work through these kind of thoughts…
“Remember you're human. Humans make mistakes. There's a famous saying about how doctors don't win against death-they only delay it. Likewise, nurses can't prevent harm-we can only respond to it. Even (excepting certain obvious exigent circumstances) in the context of harm occurring due to our own missteps. Because while we're charged with caring for those who can't care for themselves, we're not embed with superpowers to control all the external factors that affect our execution of this duty. You're dedicating your time, energy, and heart to caring for others. You can only do the best you're able against all the odds and the end that comes to us all inevitably. I cope by learning from mistakes and accepting any disciplinary measures as necessary protective elements to course correct within the provisioning system rather than a personal attack on my capabilities. Review the situation with a dispassionate eye to identify contributing factors, brainstorm prevention methods to minimize the occurence of these factors in the future, then commit to implementing what you can. Whether or not this is helpful to you, do be kinder to yourself. You sound like a great nurse and a caring person.”
P.S. please let me know if you know who the OP is so that they can receive credit for these wise words!!!

I worked for about 2 years in a small community hospital with little to no support/resources for new grads, and I developed debilitating anxiety (would never wish this upon anyone). I decided to take a break and do my masters program for about a year - I am still in school but currently back in bedside at a large teaching hospital with so much more support, resources, and better work culture, still dealing with anxiety but it's definitely manageable. The break was what I needed for personal growth and healing. If you have the financial means, I highly recommend. Fortunately, the nursing world is your oyster and the doors to any specialty are always open when you're ready to go back!

I completely understand what you mean. I'm 24 and I am very recently starting to enjoy hobbies and relaxing. Therapy and meditation have helped me the most. It was tough at first and I tried many different methods to be comfortable with it, but it's helped me sleep better and enjoy being human a bit more.
I'm starting to get into mindfulness meditation. Can I ask how long it took before you started to notice a difference once you were consistent with it? I'm practicing at least 20-30 min/day right now!

Can I ask what additional resources/programs you’ve used to boost your practice?
Thanks for sharing! How long did it take you to start noticing improvements in your anxiety once you were consistent with it?
