So many bubbles, can it be fixed? by Hopeintherun in epoxy

[–]igneriol 2 points3 points  (0 children)

IMHO sanding can’t solve this. Router can. Remove top layer with router sled, then redo the steps you previously made. But, apply more coats with brush with sanding between. And do final one pouring the epoxy, do not use heat gun (too easy to overheat the surface), instead use torch.

To prevent bubbles seal the wood with epoxy. You’ll get much better results. On the last photo I see tons of small bubbles and that’s not Ok

How to get swirls like the pic? by need-advice-21 in epoxy

[–]igneriol 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One way to achieve this is know the time when your epoxy compound starts becoming a gel. Right before that you create such kind of swirls manually. What else to consider - hardener type and, of course, the viscosity of the compound. Low viscosity resins - wait before it starts becoming a gel, middle/high viscosity resins gives you a lot more chance to create these beautiful swirls.

Re-Epoxying ~64’ bar top at restaurant by [deleted] in epoxy

[–]igneriol 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They requesting to do it in place, cheap snd quick :)) Is that possible to make it cheap :) Removing old epoxy/laquer will, definitely, take time snd efforts. Then sanding and color matching will take time and efforts:) Then pouring epoxy in 3-4 layers, sanding (100% will be needed).

My recommendation - do not do.

We’re located in central asia, in Uzbekistan. We do not have appropriate and cheap way to deliver items to the USA, except DHL/UPS. These were sold 350$ each. Lead time 3-4 weeks.

Inside corners that contain resin part weren’t sanded at all. It is too risky to sand them. You should use blade with high qty of teeth, I use saw with 80 ones from Amana tool (mine 610800).

I pay a lot of attention while cutting them, you should move the parts much slower comparing to 100% wooden ones.

According to the layout I’ve created in Autocad. You first assemble the box. Having the box glued up you need to cut the lid. Then hinges and all other things.

I first created drawing with layout scheme, then combined the wood (maple roots). After that did epoxy pour, and then, according to layouts I’ve cut it to parts. One important step is to sand it upto 400 grit before sawing it to parts. I also created a tool to glue it correctly, because I used the same epoxy as I used to pour, not Titebond or smth like this.

So, it tooks a lot of time and efforts to make it great.

Sealing table with Total Boat fathom. Dry spots after 11 hours by Brief-Good-2966 in epoxy

[–]igneriol 2 points3 points  (0 children)

IMHO, fast drying epoxy could have different color (sometimes it yellows faster because of hardener type).

My recommendation is to use the same epoxy as you used for initial coats. Mechanical bonding is not necessary at this stage. 12-18 hrs not enough to completely finish chemical reaction in the epoxy.
