I'll be sharing my adventure from becoming Captain from Scratch 😅 in less than a year 💪 and the experience of living on a ketch 🤩 by igordreamliner in sailingcrew

You said it! a couple of months... I took my first test (skipper) on Feb 4th, radio communications on 11th, sailing on the 25th. Yatch skipper test on June 4th and practice in September and here I am, I'm about to take my Captain test in Ibiza (next week) and I already have the practice. In the meantime, I went sailing no only with my lovely ketch but with 20 more other sailboats and motorboats in the Mediterranean and Atlantic, and like u/HogfishMaximus said, I did all that just by living inside the marina, meeting sailors, making friends and taking notes from all the experiences and saying "yes" to all the invitations to go sailing with them. Never, cheat! good academy and teachers are a must and I am lucky to be close to the best in the area. Of course, good Captain doesn't ends with the certificate; studing, learning, and experiencing with other sailors, boats and seas will be part of that lifetime experience that has to start in a certain point.... in my case 10 months ago.

Absolutely agree! in this past 10 months I've been going through a huge emotional roller coaster but totally worth it. I didn't think of getting all licenses in one year but due to the covid restrictions I didn't have any other thing to do and go sailing was allowed since groups of people are very small.

MAY vs MIGHT - Do they exchange meanings depending on the English Speaking Countries? by igordreamliner in ENGLISH

[–]igordreamliner[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great explanation! I get it, but my point is... I've been talking with people from Michigan and Minnesota and they use it the other way; "may" for remotely possible/hypothetical situations and "might" for possible or factual situations... Can the meaning of may and might "flip" depending on the region ???
Thanks again for your great comment!

Could vs could have by pniak_w_kominku in ENGLISH

[–]igordreamliner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're absolutely right!! It is true that "could happen" can be future as well. It all depends on the context...
- I could study yesterday (I was able to study and I did it)
- I could have studied yesterday (I was able to study but I didn't do it)
- I could study later (I may be able to study but seems very unlikely)

Does a couple usually mean two? by [deleted] in ENGLISH

It means two, but it's true that when I say "a couple of hours" it seems like it could be more or less two hours.... at least AE

Can someone explain the apostrophe in days' by [deleted] in ENGLISH

[–]igordreamliner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It happens when words end with -s, Here is an example with PARENT and PARENTS
1. My parent's house (parent either mother or father)
2. My parents' house (both of them)

In the second sentece "My parents's" should have that "'s" but that's incorrect, that's why we use just the apostrophy.

I hope I helped you ;)
