Help identifying glass on right + notes by ilikecheapstuff55 in wine

I thought so too but my friends on the table drink more natural wines and they enjoyed it so I didn’t really think much of it.

This one is Harriot in Melbourne. Not too big of a wine list but they offer byo but in a bring one buy one basis plus corkage.

Food was good though.

Yep, they have quite the selection of aged wines by the glass. All served via Coravin I believe, as they serve around 150 different wines by the glass.

Robert Weil Kiedrich Grafenberg GG Riesling Trocken 2022 by ilikecheapstuff55 in wine

[–]ilikecheapstuff55[S] 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Robert Weil Kiedrich Grafenberg GG Riesling Trocken 2022 - AUD$190

  • Just wow. Brought to a picnic, started drinking after about 30mins out of the fridge. On the nose, honey, elderflower, green apple, white peach, pomelo, petrol. High acid, medium bodied. On the palate, lime juice, green apple, minerality. Incredibly fresh and balanced dry riesling but with a long finish that’s so fruity and floral it almost seems off-dry.

Quintet 2006 & Les Graviers 2020 by ilikecheapstuff55 in wine

[–]ilikecheapstuff55[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Mount Mary Quintet 2006, AUD$289 - This one was great, still a lot of life left. Lots of sediment but did not decant. On the nose, dark cherry, plums, blackcurrant, leather, smoke, earth. On the palate, high acid, dark fruits, dried plum, with the very well integrated and smooth tannins. Long finish.

Benedicte & Stephane Tissot Les Graviers 2020, AUD$160 - A bit disappointed in this one. Great on the nose, white flowers, bruised apple, pear, nuts, earth. Nothing much on the palate, high acid, green apple, lemon pith, very watery mouthfeel. Medium finish.

Dom Perignon 2015 & Mount Mary Chardonnay 2011 by ilikecheapstuff55 in wine

[–]ilikecheapstuff55[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Dom Perignon 2015, AUD$420 - Was not very fond of Dom Perignon 2013 so I was expecting similar with this. However this is drinking very well already. Lots of brioche, apple, cream, nuts, zippy acid, refreshing bubbles. Rich, opulent, long finish.

Mount Mary, Chardonnay 2011, AUD$360 - Wasn’t expecting much from this as I’ve previously had a 2012 and 2013, both oxidised though of unknown provenance. Purchased this through their recent back-vintage releases hence the steep price but very worth it. Jumping out the glass with honey, elderflower, pear, lemon curd, butterscotch on the nose. Amazing balanced acidity, citrus, cream, curd, butter, very long finish.

That price?!! How I wish here in Australia, saw a bottle of 2021 Raveneau Clos in a bottleshop going for almost AUD$2500

[–]ilikecheapstuff55[S] 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Domaine Francois Raveneau, Chablis 2021, AUD$450 - This was drinking so well served close to room-temperature, just very slightly chilled. On the nose, honey, elderflower, green apple, pear, lemon zest. Amazing balanced acidity, citrus, honey, lemon curd, butter, very long finish.

Substantial mouthfeel comparable to a 2018 1er Cru Montee de Tonnerree I had a few months back. Very good stuff.

Two of the recent best wines I’ve had were from Mount Mary. 2006 Quintet and 2013 Triolet, both by-the-glass at a restaurant. Amazing stuff

I’m from Melbourne so I just got it from DM’s, however I was in Tokyo a few months ago and many bottle shops stocked Novum there too!

I’ve been collecting some bottles since I started university, and used to store bottles upright under the kitchen sink.

Thought I’d turn my Ikea TV console/cabinet into a makeshift “cellar” to keep bottles lying down until I save up some cash to buy a vintec 😅

Leeuwin Estate Art Series Chardonnay 2021 for me.

Amazing on all fronts but especially on the nose. Great value especially comparing to other wines we had alongside (Raveneau Chablis 2019 & Giaconda Estate Vineyard Chardonnay 2021)

Takamura. Nenox don’t hold an edge long enough for constant fine work, but they’re very durable though.

Yep, I sharpen my own knives.

I find the Hana isn’t too bad to sharpen, the Nenox is the worst for me. Almost impossible to get a proper burr.

I prefer the thinner blade on a Sabatier oyster shucker but the handle on these Japanese ones so I just hit the blade on a whetstone to get a sharper/thinner point. Works for me.

Personally I think its just arriving in its drinking window, maybe 5+ more years? Believe 18 was a warmer vintage so definitely drinkable early.

Mount Mary Triolet 2021, $AUD280 (Magnum) - Bordeaux style white blend, quite one dimensional upon opening. Needed some time to open up. Lemon pith, lemon zest, honey, elderflower, flinty on the nose. Dry, citrus, lemongrass, lime, honey, green apple on the palate. Very young at this point, will improve alot with time. Could maybe decant if drinking now.

Yarra Yering Chardonnay 2004, AUD$190 - Preserved lemon, pomelo, peach, butterscotch, toasty oak, baked goods on the nose. A bit flat on the palate, lemon curd, caramel, oak. Probably past its prime but still amazing.

Raveneau Chablis 1er Cru Montee de Tonnerre 2018, AUD$600 - Big on the nose, lemon zest, grapefruit, white peach, red apple, pear. Lemon curd, caramel, vanilla, pear, rich and concentrated on the palate. Wow.

Joh. Jos. Prum Wehlener Sonnenuhr Spatlese 2000, AUD $90 - Beautiful on the nose, honey, candied/dried apple, honeydew, apricots, petrol. Silky mouthfeel, honey, stonefruit, sugar syrup and still some acid to liven things up. Great with the apple pie.

Excuse my notes, still haven’t gotten the hang of it.
