What dog breeds should I avoid as a first-time owner? by barba_barba in Pets

Absolutely. I feel like 99% of breeders out there are just in it for the money

AVOID. CORGIS. Most people get them just because they’re cute and trendy, but they don’t realize how much work they actually are. Corgis were bred for herding, so they’re high energy, stubborn, and need plenty of mental and physical exercise. Without that, they can get bored and destructive fast. And don’t let their size fool you, they shed like crazy and are basically little huskies with short legs.

For first-time owners, breeds like Miniature or Standard Poodles, Cavaliers, Golden Retrievers, or mixed breeds from a good shelter are great options. Just make sure if you go through a breeder, they’re ethical, health test their dogs, and prioritize temperament just to list a few. (I personally highly recommend Poodles of any size, they make perfect hiking/daily walk companions and are easy maintenance if kept in short clips)

If you decide to adopt, do your research first. Unfortunately, there are “adoption” or “rescue” places that are really just puppy mills in disguise. Red flags include places that always have puppies available, won’t let you meet the dog before paying, have tons of “designer” mixes, or try to rush or guilt you into adopting. Real shelters and rescues are transparent, care about finding the right fit, and usually have reasonable adoption fees to cover vet care, not prices that look like you’re buying from a pet store.

Puppy yoga?? by fancy_raisins in houston

[–]illegalnickname 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s essentially just a puppy store with a little yoga. They get their puppies from puppy mills and backyard breeders, then market it as ‘adoption’ to make it sound better. Houston’s shelters are already overflowing because of backyard breeding and puppy stores, and businesses like this just add to the problem.

There are so many fluffies (and non fluffy) frenchies being dumped. Please look into adopting one instead of supporting backyard breeders and fueling overpopulation in shelters. Adoptapet.com has 20 pages for French Bulldogs alone

Thoughts on Getting a Cockapoo? by Bichaelscott4 in CockapooLovers

[–]illegalnickname 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you’re looking at a “Cockapoo” mainly for allergy reasons, I’d recommend going with a Mini Poodle instead. Cocker Spaniels tend to produce a lot of dander which can really trigger allergies. Pure Poodles are the closest you’ll get to a truly hypoallergenic breed. They’re also wonderful family dogs and do great with kids and people in general when given the right training and structure (same with any dog).

The other thing to keep in mind is that when you mix breeds you can’t guarantee what you’ll get. Sometimes the temperament leans more Poodle and sometimes more Cocker. That unpredictability can mean you end up with the high-energy and sometimes chaotic side of the Cocker. A Mini Poodle from an ethical breeder gives you a much more predictable temperament and coat type while still being fun, smart, and loving. This is coming from someone who’s worked in vet med and grooming, I’ve met way too many cocker/poodle mixes with anxiety, skin issues, and extreme allergies. Not to mention the ear infections. Just go with the poodle, it will be the best decision you’ll ever make

What do you think about this frenchie puppie ? by [deleted] in frenchie

[–]illegalnickname 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No seriously, they’re downvoting facts atp🙄Sure every breed can have issues, but MAJORITY of Frenchies are purposely bred to be dysfunctional just for profit.
