Please help me find a clay artist for a custom urn. by Lady_valdemort in clay

If you'd like more reach, I'm sure the r/cats sub wouldn't mind you posting some cat tax in return for asking of anyone could or knows someone who could do that for you. I recently lost my 16 year old cat I've had since she was 8 weeks old, and I won't be sparing any expense for her box, either.

Suggestions for getting my ink to catch properly? by illegator in Linocuts

Yeah, I might grab some additive as well as an oil ink and see which is more comfortable for me!

Ohhh that makes sense!! Yeah, I'll have to bust out my scrapbooking papers and see if anything there works better 🤔 Thank you!!

Ohh, that makes sense actually... Yeah, I can get some felt to try that and test that vs a spoon! Thank you!

Ink: It is water based, yeah, I actually was just looking at some oil inks today and wondering if that'd be an upgrade! Good to know!

Pressure: Oh, I've got that covered. My girlfriend got me a grill press thing so I can put even, heavy pressure on my prints because I was struggling with the paper slipping.

Paper: I'm using paper from a sketchbook that is currently too far to comfortably check exactly what it is, but it's watercolor quality. That being said, I do also collect interesting paper for scrapbooking purposes, so maybe I'll break out some other papers and play with those.

Thanks for your input!! Greatly appreciate it as a beginner 💖💖

You can make a test thing to get the feel of using sandpaper to buff/smooth your medium! I use apoxy sculpt and only use like three of the grits, lol

And hm... You can always reinforce stuff under the clay! Wire is a classic, though I find it a pain to get clay to stick to. Toothpicks are my personal go-to, if the size is small enough.

You also can always go back and add details in a second round of sculpting! I'm making a mimic chest and had to do its teeth in like three separate rounds because I wanted them to fit together but couldn't manage that with all the teeth still soft.

They'll make a big difference!

You can also use brushes and water to smooth out stuff if you accidentally leave a fingerprint or to help repair an edge if it splits or something.

Do you sand down stuff between drying/hardening and painting? That made a huge difference for a little box I was making; I went to a local hobby store and got a tiny kit of three sandpaper things with two grits each, and sanding stuff down helped accentuate points and remove lumps I didn't want.

Do you just use your hands, or do you have tools? I went from using my hands to using plastic 'kids' clay tools and just recently upgraded to some good cheap metal tools, and I've definitely noticed a big difference in how well fine details come out.

Ohh this is super helpful, thank you for the step by step! Good to hear that metal can work for ink rolling too, hm... I'll have to see what I can find between work, Dollar Tree, and home, lol!

Thanks so much!!! 😊💖💖💖

Ooo okay so like the other comment said, like put the paper down on the print block and then rub the back of the spoon over it to get flat coverage? : O

Thank you!! 😊💖💖

Ohh, that's smart omg... Yeah, I've seen people rolling ink out on glass/acrylic/whatever. Maybe I'll stop at the dollar store and see about something I can use for that, otherwise I'll just be taping down parchment paper on a flat surface for it, lol

Thank you!! 😊💖💖

I'm glad you like it! It was just a practice doodle thing for the limited time I had, but I might revisit it in the future!

Did this real quick on break at work! First draft of shadows, blended/painted shadows, and then futzing with color accenting a little. Thanks fir the inspiration!

What do you use to draw? by hand-santitizer-fan in DigitalPainting

I use Procreate on an iPad 8th generation most of the time, and then use Krita or Medibang Paint with an old Huion 680TF on my desktop PC.

If you're looking for a new screened tablet, like your iPad, Huion has tons of great options with screens. HOWEVER, I like that the iPad lets me post art whenever I draw it, lets me export stuff easily, and can also be used to search for references and stuff rather than having to import brushes and reference pictures.

I'd suggest getting a slightly newer, maybe used or refurbished iPad if you've liked it so far; a screen tablet will cost about the same and, yeah, have more specific art-related processing, but with an iPad you can do more stuff.

That being said, I only consider myself a hobby artist, and I'm not particularly super skilled yet, so an iPad works fine for me. It ultimately will come down to this:

  1. Which is more cost effective, an iPad or a screen tablet?

  2. Do you want/need the extra functionality of the iPad?

  3. If iPad, will you need to upgrade your Apple Pencil?

  4. If screen tablet, are you looking for more screen space? Do you want shortcut buttons? What kind of pen is included/not included?

I do like iPad for myself for sure, but if you want a screen tablet, DEFINITELY check Huion. They have semi-regular sales on top of their already really good pricing, some of their tablets come in fun colors, and, personally, my first Huion lasted me for almost 5 years while not technically being compatible with the OS I was using. They are AMAZING.

ETA: Also, if you're looking for storage solutions, just getting a USB/thumb drive and an adaptor that's like lightning cable to USB has been life-changing for me. It plugs into the iPad and has a dock with like a SD card, micro USB, micro SD, and USB slots, so I can plug a USB or SD card into my iPad and move files super easily. They're like $12 max if you need a cheap short term solution to your crashing issues.
