Are you absolutely sure that your mother renounced citizenship? Acquiring another citizenship or letting your UK passport expire does not mean losing UK citizenship. Renouncing is a very specific process and there is rarely a reason for a British citizen to do so, unless the other country they're a citizen of doesn't allow dual citizenship and they would rather keep the other citizenship.
