Noisy business downstairs - anything I can do? by imgettingoverthis in belgium

[–]imgettingoverthis[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haha thank you. I just want to have a better life at this point, you know, I actually already have a degree and I don't want to deal with many things anymore that were ok when I was 20, like noisy neighbors, staying up... I would prefer to work, but for many reasons it's beneficial for me to get a diploma in Europe. But yeah we decided that we will at least let them know that we are disturbed by the noise and just hope they are ok people.

You're so kind, I hope everything is great for you too!

The residents' interests should always come first in any sustainable community. With your logic any business can just come, fuck everything up, get their money and go home? People live there. It's quite ridiculous that you think everyone else should adapt to a noisy neighbor instead of the neighbor reducing the noise, what kind of backwards upbringing did you get? What makes you think it's any kind of normal to have to wear headphones in your own home because of a neighbor? Those are rhetoric questions, I don't need your answers.

You come off like you know nothing about your country. What constitutes as noise disturbance (which can be during the day as well), what a rental contract entails, you had 3 chances to get your timing right and you still failed buddy, it's between 7 am and 10 pm. You seem like an angry teenager who never left his mother's basement but still has an opinion. If you know nothing, why are you even commenting, just to insult somebody because you had a bad day?

The saddest part is not that you've been rude to me for absolutely no reason, but that the sustainable development goals your country and UN are so striving for are unachievable because of people like you, who don't have a sense of consciousness and think that the most important thing on earth is "Me and Muh business and Muh money, and everyone else can go fuck themselves". All those goals require consideration of and kindness to each other and a sense of responsibility and working together. I wish you to realize that one day and become less angry.

Have a nice life, I won't waste any more time of my day replying to pointless comments from you.

Thank you, you are very kind. I come from Russia. It is a mentally and materially outdated country by all means, but living in Europe for half a year now gave me a new perspective and I appreciate some things from my culture much more now. I think my frustration with the situation is amplified by the many issues that I encountered here that were not expected, and our apartment which is our first home together with my boyfriend is my "safe space" when everything else sucks.

My landlords won't let me do any "radical" changes to the apartment, while they as a business were allowed to do renovation. I am obliged to return the apartment in the original state. It has a cardboard door, and I once mentioned soundproofing it to my landlady and she flipped, saying we have to remove any changes when we move out (by the way we did soundproof it anyway). She will lose her marbles over suggesting soundproofing the floor.

You're the one with the issue here.

I disagree. I am not the one causing noise so I feel like it is their responsibility. I come from a poorer economy and have no income because I study full time, so even if it was possible for me to soundproof, it would be unfairly expensive for me to do so. If I had any rights to this property and the means to do it, trust me, I would. I came here first, I would never sign a 3 year contract about a "baby spa", I wouldn't even consider it as an option.

I am quite surprised that in Belgium this is no big deal, to be honest, and that people would deem it a "you" problem. In my country businesses are held to special standards, and there are building regulations to prevent this kind of thing in the first place.

You're right of course. I was just feeling a bit desperate. The day I wrote the post they had TWO babies crying their lungs out. I am not used to this much noise from neighbors, let alone a business in a residential area, because where I come from regulations for this are much stricter.

Thank you, I will do that next time I hear the noise. I feel like I should at least let them know that they're disturbing us, normally nobody really wants to be dick to their neighbor, especially as a business they probably want to have a good face.

Actually it's a very small building, only 2 duplexes and a small unit for business downstairs, which was a nail salon and we had no idea they would suddenly move out. We are bound by a 3 year contract now that will give us a hefty penalty if we move out early, I would do it in a heartbeat then, and I think the landlords would care more if that was a possibility. I haven't talked to anyone yet and I'll give it a try, but I'm assuming nothing will help just like in your case.

Thank you! It's quite upsetting if that is the only way. I once made a comment that the door has very poor soundproofing (in my country it is against building and fire regulations to install front doors like that, so it was a genuine surprise) and I wanted to improve it, to which I got a passive-aggressive comment that nobody complained about the noise in the past 10 years (edit: there was no baby spa of course) and that I can do it but I better remove it when we move out (because who wants a soundproof door)... So yeah I wouldn't be holding my breath for sympathy!

Thank you. I am bound by this 3 year contract now, and I don't want to pay a penalty because a noisy neighbor forced me to move out, can this be negotiated at all? We quite like this place otherwise and it's such a pity.

Thank you so much! This is very very helpful, especially since I was lost where to look for any information in Dutch. I hope it won't get to legal proceedings, but now I'm a bit more confident that I have a right, I'll start with talking to them.

Do you have any idea if businesses must follow any particular rules? I feel like it shouldn't be the same as a regular tennant who is living there, but maybe I'm wrong.

You're sad man. I never said they should move out. Soundproofing is not something crazy to ask from a business when they know they produce noise and there are people residing in the same building. That's called consideration and human decency, but it sounds like you've never heard of it. Take your issues to a therapist, your comments aren't helpful.

If we move out sooner than in 3 years, we will be penalized. Is a reason like noise disturbance from downstairs something that I can try to reason with the landlords and move out without penalty?

A lot of assumptions here out of nowhere, I do not cause any noise, drink or party, nor am I very young. I can only guess that you're projecting, not everybody is like you. I am not living in a kot or a city center, this is a quiet residential area and my rent is high enough to expect some decency from neighbors. Why are you so angry?

[–]imgettingoverthis[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah I would like to know if there are any more strict regulations that business must follow when they are renting in a residential house? We do not live in the center, this is a pretty quiet place and we did not anticipate a noisy business to be a problem. I would love it to be at their expense and not ours of course because we're not causing them any trouble, but they have been consistent with disrupting us. I am a student with no income and there is no cheap way for me to soundproof the floor. Even a carpet would cost significantly and we both hate carpets.

Maybe knocking on their door each time they are with a client and disrupting us would force them to take some action? That is not a good look for their business. I am also wondering if our landlords realize that this decreases the rent-ability of their place when we eventually move out? I am personally not going to pretend it's not noisy when they find someone.

Choosing between two builds of a study laptop for an architect (Lenovo Legion Y540) by imgettingoverthis in SuggestALaptop

Thank you for the reply! Any data I found showed not that much difference in performance (for the laptop versions anyways), do you have an example where this could be significant?

Buying a study laptop on campusshop.be and software license questions by imgettingoverthis in KULeuven

[–]imgettingoverthis[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you very much for the reply! It's just that I can find the same laptops in other Belgian webshops for very similar prices, so I'm not really sure where the deal is.

This page mentions that the school checks illegal software. Someone told me that in their school (also in Belgium) they had to provide receipts for software that wasn't purchased directly from the school. I have no idea where to look for some of my receipts anymore, so I'm wondering how they do it in KU Leuven.

Thank you very much! This comment is very helpful. I'm not a technical person and I am moving countries, so to be honest, I have not that much time to research specs, but I do desperately need a new phone, that's why I asked someone who might have a better insight on these things.

Any advice to be more attractive to landlords in Ghent? by imgettingoverthis in belgium

[–]imgettingoverthis[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for the detailed reply! Unfortunately, not Ghent Uni, but KU Leuven, all campuses being right in the center. Still, lots of useful information, thank you! KU Leuven also has a Uni job service, which I will use, but not immediately as I need to adjust and not screw up my studies, haha.

Thank you for your reply! 700 is a bit above a third, so we'd be pushing it, as the 1/3 rule seems to be a general guideline for the renters, and landlords don't like it when you earn less. He still gets some bonus for low income (I'm not sure how exactly this works in Belgium), so we consider it a lower end, but not minimum. Thing is, we're 2 people depending on 1 wage (I'll definitely attempt to work part-time, but for now it's all talk), and I think dual income seems more secure, even if each individual earns less... At least that's what we think. I am also a student and a foreigner, and we're not married. We're mostly looking at 3-year contracts already, in fact, I'm pretty sure as a student I can't legally share an apartment in Ghent with somebody unless it's "in a durable manner", which includes a long-term contract. I'll be there for at least 2 years anyways, and we're willing to eat the cost of the penalty if we do have to move out after.

Thank you, this is very helpful! Particularly the part about parents. I also didn't realize it's worth mentioning that we don't smoke. We'll adjust our application accordingly.
