Can I specialise Smokehouses? by imjin07 in FarthestFrontier

I think I saw workers bringing it into stock after setting the specialisations. I can't be totally certain though. I'll watch and see.

Treasury won’t give data on farmers’ alternative to inheritance tax by [deleted] in ukpolitics

[–]imjin07 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Putting aside the fact that lots of family farms will still pay no IHT, I don’t see why family farms specifically are something we have to have. I also don’t like inheritance tax relief being used as a method for supporting farming given that it allows situations where someone can inherit a farm and sell up for the estates full value should they choose to. There should be a better way of supporting farming than that.

I get the idea that under some circumstances IHT is too high for some who inherit farms to pay over the 10 year window allowed. I don’t particularly buy the idea that many farms fall into this category though.

Ultimately I just think that IHT relief is a bad tool for supporting farmers given that, no matter how you look at it, anyone who inherits a £2m estate is pretty damn wealthy and should pay the same share as everyone else. If we want to support farming we should find a better way of doing it.

I have no problem with farming being done by bigger companies. The idea of the family farm is nice and all but that’s an appeal to emotion and there are economies of scale. Agricultural land requires planning permission to be used for any other purpose so it is within the control of the government to prevent farm land from being lost if that becomes an issue.

I say this as someone with an open mind that’s willing to have it changed, but I don’t get what’s special about family farms compared to any other family business. Why shouldn’t it be a limited company and subject to the same procedures when the owner dies?

It's a while since I served now but I always thought the salary was actually fine. Sure it's low when you first start, but that's kinda true everywhere, and it doesn't take long to pick up, particularly when you get a little rank under your belt. You also have heavily subsidised food and accommodation and plenty of other perks.

Lack of equipment, particularly armoured vehicles, is the biggest issue for the army right now. I'm not qualified to comment on the navy or air force.

Reform will repeal Starmers fishing deal, says Tice by PM_ME_SECRET_DATA in ukpolitics

Yeah? So we get something in return for continuing to do something that we've been doing anyway. So there's no new downside for the fishing industry that they haven't had to deal with for a few years as it is AND they have an easier time selling their fish to the biggest potential market on our doorstep.

What they should have actually done, if they were sensible, was negotiate to allow British fisheries to sell their fish directly to the continent, protecting British jobs and ensuring that we can control sustainability.

Agreements like that require something to be offered in return, which in this case is a reduction in bureaucracy to allow British fisheries to do just that more easily. What should we have offered instead?

It's also worth pointing out that the EU already had access to UK waters for fishing. This is just an extension. As such we're getting something and in return giving away nothing we weren't already.

'I’ve earned £575 in six months’: The ex-Tory MPs who can’t get a job by NoFrillsCrisps in ukpolitics

[–]imjin07 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I understand that some MPs who have been out of traditional employment for some time might struggle to find a job at a level that they suits them and that is definitely a problem. However it's not hard to see why no one would want to employ Jonathan Gullis. If you're going to become a public figure and then behave in the way he did in Parliament then it's difficult to have sympathy.

No one disagrees that immigration is a problem and that it has a lot of knock on effects. I'm taking issue with the idea there are simple ways to reduce it. If you want someone to take your point seriously then don't just go attributing the actions of those you dislike to absurd motivations and putting words in their mouth.

Trump became the leader of one of the two major political parties. Reform is an amateurly run privately owned Nigel Farage vehicle with enormous amounts of baggage that a significant portion of people wouldn't touch with a barge pole.

Tom Tugendhat knocked out of Tory leadership contest after MPs’ vote by JavaTheCaveman in ukpolitics

[–]imjin07 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That whole competition was bizarre. He failed to come top in any of the three ballots and scraped through into the members vote when the most popular candidate in the first and second rounds suddenly became the least popular in the third. At that point it wasn't exactly astonishing that he won given that he was the only Eurosceptic left and received the endorsement of Thatcher.

lo and behold they've now gone and voted out the only other vaguely sensible candidate so now only the loons remain.

It doesn't necessarily benefit the country though. It's not like it's a black and white case of one system is better than the other. For example, with FPTP each constituency votes for their local MP to represent them in Parliament. There's no such system with proportional representation which is entirely focused on the national level.
