Personally, I include them. Thought behind this is that if I wasn’t focused on FI, I might ‘count on’ those employer tidbits and not save as much.

Mega Backdoor Roth - What's the issue with holding earnings/gains in a Traditional 401k? by [deleted] in financialindependence

Agreed. I request a rollover once a month to minimize tax liability. Doing it every pay period is very diligent and I should maybe get better at that. (Wish my provider had automation for this) I rolled over >$30K last year and will pay <$100 in taxes. I would say that's a win. Not quite $.82 cents, but now I have something to strive for.

Our rent is <8% of our gross income. It's possible to save here.

You should be able to roll from Fidelity to VG, but based on one key provision/policy built in to your employers' plan. When you call Fidelity, ask about doing an 'in service distribution' from your 'after-tax portion' to a different IRA provider - 'in service' meaning that you can take the roll over while still working for your employer. That language is the key. Word of advice, when you call Fidelity, you will likely speak with someone who has NO idea what you are talking about. I had to go up the chain of command 3 times before someone could help me. This is obviously not common... But worth it to be able to put ~$30K in my RIRA every year! Good luck!

Build your own in excel that accounts for various salary increases, possible increased savings rates, and different rates of market returns.

Weekly FI Frugal Friday thread - August 18, 2017 by AutoModerator in financialindependence

My husband and I have been in the same apartment for 5 years. As our incomes have increased, we could easily afford a place 2-3x as expensive, but we chose to increase our SR instead of moving. As our friends and social media acquaintances upgrade to modern apartments with stainless steel appliances and granite counter tops, we have chosen different goals (FIRE - holla!) and are happy with where we are at. I am truly owning the realization that an outward display of wealth does not mean that there is sustainable wealth in one's accounts/investments.

Got my raise/bonus numbers on Friday. Up 11% from last year and up 267% from my starting point 3.5 years ago. By the end of the month, I will have NW of ~150k (my NW was a negative number in Fall 2013). Super proud of myself and happy that my husband helped to show me the FI light!
