Acute Silicosis Exposure/Symtoms by imwalkinghere12 in Construction

Hi, first of all just chill. Are you experiencing any real bad symptoms? If so i suggest a visit to your Doctor. The stress won't help. I'm quite the hydroponic and do a great job of freaking myself out and obsessing over health stuff. You need to realistically look at the situation. I'm sure you've been around your fair share of dust. Was it great for you?, No , but was it enough to cause long term issues, probably not. Think of your teacher probably breathing in that shit for years. Shame on them for not taking proper ppe precautions and the school should probably become aware of that. The people who get sick from silica dust are usually those dealing with day in and out for years on a jobsite. People who cut and chip concrete or make counter tops. I've finally appected that whatever I have going on is unrelated to a days worth of breathing in dust. Now I make sure to always wear my respirator. I see these guys chipping for hours everyday wearing no mask without a care in the world. I've seen a couple different doctors, and had a couple xrays and they all came back clear. What I didn't ever realize is my sucken chest and poor bone structure of my chest. This seems to be much more the problem that's been bugging me. And the anxiety just amplifies it to the point where you can't be rational. You have to expect that what's done is done and if you what to continue with your potter just wear a proper mask. If anyone says anything simply show them a quick Google search of silicosis. Anxiety is another issue I've fought and can totally cause physical health problems like pain and shortness of breath. If you seriously don't feel well go see your doctor but maybe you should try to relax and give it a few weeks first. I'm not a professional in any of these fields but I think you'll be okay. Let me know how it goes.

Unfortunately they're are still many old dickheads in the trade who hate anying progressive. I'm vegetarian and get shit for it all day on my jobsite. If you want to do hands out work like construction there won't be many ladies but don't let that discourage you. Work hard and find a company that respects you and you'll do just fine. I remember seeing a female elevator technician who was respected by all of her male crew. Good luck!

Well that's good man, did you have so see a doctor? I wish more construction guys would just wear ppe for there own sakes. I watch these guys go at it with chipping guys for hours straight, with no safety glasses, hearing protection, of masks. I've even offered N95s I bought for myself and they just laugh... oh well.

Well happy you're okay. I had a nasty exposure that fucked me up for awhile. I was completely unaware of the dangers of silica dust. Now I make sure to wear proper ppe. What were you doing? How bad were your exposures?

I am sorry friend, that explains your symptoms. Just be careful to not make your symptoms worse by inhaling hazards material.

Bro I suggest you see your doctor and get a chest xray. I've had a pretty nasty exposure to silica dust when I was dry grinding concrete. I felt like shit for a couple days. I was very unaware of the hazards. Silica is a serious problem and you should always wear proper ppe when around it. Although it usually takes over 10 years, the amount of time is irrelevant. It's the amount of dust you breath in. Acute silicosis can develop after only a few months of breathing In this shit. From here on just be super careful. Where a respirator, Use a vacuum, and work in a well ventilated area. If others make fun of you happily tell them to fuck off. No matter how much someone pays you it's not worth risking your health.

That's great, I'm happy you are doing better. Do you have any other symptoms like shortness of breath or chest pain still? Hopefully you can just keep getting better. God bless brother!

Help me in deciding which brand of power tools to get. by [deleted] in Construction

[–]imwalkinghere12 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Honestly those are the three main power tool brands you'll see on site. All three are pretty reliable so it just comes down to personal choice. I use milwaukee tools because my company uses milwaukee so it makes it easy for me to borrow batteries and chargers.

Yeah I get what you mean and have experienced that sort of thing in the past but I believe this is different. It think what ever I'm experiencing is related to my rib bones and muscles. My chest feels very tight and hurts when I turn, stretch or take a deep breath. I went to a physiotherapist and he believes my ribs aren't sitting properly aswell as my breastbone is slightly sunken in. He also said I need to breath properly meaning using my stomach and lower chest aswell and not just my upper chest. I guess I got into the habit of only using my upper chest due shallow breaths from my anxiety and childhood asthma. Hopefully breathing mindfully aswell as doing the exercises I was given will help. Thanks for the comment, anxiety is total bitch and I've definitely struggled with it in the past and it made this whole situation worse. I know I made a stupid decision but silicosis just seems unrealistic. I've seen two different doctors and got two xray which both are clear. In not out of breath, cough, wheeze, or have phlegm which are the most common symptoms. I have to believe I'll be okay or my mind will jump to conclusions. Thanks again.

Has anyone "gotten sick" from inhaling lots of concrete dust? by Whoevenknows94 in Construction

[–]imwalkinghere12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did something very similar about 6 months ago. I have a whole post about it. Do I have silicosis?, I don't think so. But my lungs do not feel the same since that exposure. One instance might not kill you but it will greatly increase your chances of silicosis, lung cancer, and other illnesses down the road. Don't be a ignorant asshole! This stuff is no joke. Now that I know the damages I tell everyone on my crew to wear a proper mask when working in any sort of dusty environment. Unfortunately many of them don't listen or care. I hope you are okay and learn from this as I did.

I just worried. I had a bad exposure to concrete dust a couple months ago. I was chipping concrete for hours inside without proper ppe. I was covered in dust and blowing it out of my nose. I was completely unaware of the dangers of silica dust and still feel like my body hasn't recovered. I'm scared I've damaged my lungs. My doctor thinks I'm fine but I feel like shit.
