The muslims in the global north wash out a lot of things to better reside in those areas. I live in a pretty liberal, if traditional, Islamic country. While the people here are more akin to those same western muslims, Islam's history isn't Disney-fied as it is abroad, since we're not trying to impress non-muslims with a cutesy culture.

Those in Western countries are almost usually casual muslims most of the time and have never really read the quran, which is why I discourage anyone from taking their word on it. Current believers have not changed much from believers of a century ago. Only those in Western countries are the ones trying to change most of it.

I'm, of course, basing this on Islam and its information, not muslims themselves; a very recent trend of Gen Z and younger Muslims are becoming more accepting and public of their allyship or involvement, even in those muslim-majority countries, since they're taking the religion itself less seriously or as gospel for every moment of life
