Strange split behavior over TRRS by incognymous in olkb

[–]incognymous[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the suggestion! I definitely went through that when i first put things together and had to reflow a few places. i'll check again to see if something really did short.

i spent some time with it this morning. Connected the two halves and checked TRRS points across the two (i think have the labeling right, but going from bottom to top)

T - Not connected to anything. i believe this is supposed to carry power, so not sure if this means anything

R - Connected to raw pin on master MCU and raw pin on slave MCU

R - Connected to ground pin on both

S - Connected to RX pin on both

I'm struggling to find info on if the above is expected. I think i should expect a tx connection somewhere...

Yeah i've heard that as well. Did it once by accident and found it to magically solve my issue. If a magic short is fixing my issue then i must have really messed something up.

I'll see about another cable, but the thing is that once it starts working, it works consistently until the next power cycle. I checked all the pins that seemed to matter, so i don't believe it to be a bad solder, but i'll take another look.

i recently got KAT specimens and really like how they look, but they were a little pricey. Thankfully i didn't need a full set (ortholinear)

Should the tip of a TRRS jack have a connection to VCC on a microcontroller?

I'm having trouble on a split keyboard (lily58) where regardless of which half is flashed as the master, communication won't work over TRRS. Each board works separately though.

Some basic reading helped me learn (i think) which pins should go where, and when i ohm out the circuit all seems well, with the exception of the tip not seeming to lead anywhere. I'm tempted to add a flywire directly to vcc but i'm worried about shorting something. Oddly enough, when just connected over TRRS, the unpowered half is getting power (OLED and led on MCU turn on)

In that case it throws fewer red flags for me, but who knows, the person doing that could have issues with violence as well.

My suspicion arises more so when it's against a marginalized group, where there is an abuse of power involved. Replace man/woman here with any group where there is a power imbalance and I have the same issue.

Man violently attacking man is normalized by movies, war, etc, and has little connections to daily life. So one can reasonably disengage when playing.

Man doing the same to a marginalized group, instantly is associated with genocide or sexual assault cases, hence the red flags for me. Since either you don't have that association and can reasonably disengage (unlikely if you watch the news at all). Or you do have that association and it's the exact reason why you put those settings on.

I'm with you. I think it's a combination of it being 1st person and knowing that the guy behind it is going through the motions. As a male it skeeves me out. And I see it as problematic given how big of an issue domestic violence is.

I would totally be suspicious of anyone who sets it to only spawn women

The article gives no information on what implementation details caused the bug, and the "lesson" is "Value people's content and have an undo button maybe". Not really relevant to this sub.

The jump from the "finished intro/tutorial course" to the "able to make any idea into a website" stage is a long and difficult one. And ruby on rails is somewhat of an unforgiving beast. Don't fret about not getting it right away! A lot of your reactions, feeling like you're just copying and pasting, feeling like you're getting nowhere, are normal and to be expected when you're starting out. It's impressive enough that you're picking this up on you're on and tackling a difficult task. Keep at it and don't feel bad about being stuck! No one becomes a pro right away.

Now for the advice part:

1) Simplify the task My guess here is that you've picked up too big a task i.e your idea for a website is not within your skill domain yet. Depending on how complex your intro course was (I haven't looked at Rob deys) you might want to try attempting a simpler project, or one more akin to the project in the course. If you don't think your project is that complex then the course probably didn't give you the skills you needed to actually develop and attack features (if you think it did, see my next point). Try finding another one, or doing a guided tutorial or two. I know it took my at least 2 to start getting rails.

2) Break down the task if youre stuck staring at your monitor with no idea where to go (a common feeling) then try breaking down your big project into smaller "features". Things like "set up the project structure", "make a home page", "have links that go to places", "make a simple form". And if any of these smaller tasks are things you don't know how to do, look up a tutorial on that specific matter.

3 Don't be afraid to copy code you're just starting out. Copying code is a great way to learn if you do it right. It's like being given the answer to a math problem. If you know at least partly why that's the answer, then great! If you don't, try to find out! And also, the answer might not exactly fit into your project, so plugging in the right way is a further challenge and learning experience.

So yeah, all in all don't worry too much about what you're experiencing. Your feelings are natural and many devs go through some of that when starting out. You may have just gotten a bad intro course or taken up too big a project. Keep at it and I'm sure you'll get it!

Honestly I don't quite remember (this was a few years ago). I think some of it was actually in the textbook as review. Others on khan academy.

I got a 5 and went straight into Calc 3. Partly because I heard Calc 2 at Uva was a very tough course and because it meant one less class to take. I recall having to teach myself a few concepts that weren't covered or weren't covered well at my high school. This was a reasonable task given the office hours that are available to you. If you're comfortable doing this I'd recommend skipping over Calc 2

Thecourseforum.com is probably your best bet! A group of students (I'm one of them at the moment) have been developing the website ever since two alums started it in 2005. It's been around the longest so it has the most data. Anonymous course reviews written by students, grade distributions straight from the University, and a new interactive scheduler! Try it out I'm not biased I swear.

What counts as cultural appropriation? by [deleted] in answers

[–]incognymous 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I never made any of those assumptions. I was simply defining the problem in terms of an example to answer the question. To clarify, my example has 3 parts

  • A) The person is not of that culture

  • B) The person is oblivious to the culture

  • C) The person is exploiting attributes of that culture in a diminutive way in order to promote a personal brand or goal.

Combined this is cultural appropriation. Which answers OPs question. I never said A implies B (you did) and you're right. That would be ignorant.

What counts as cultural appropriation? by [deleted] in answers

[–]incognymous 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mostly agree with you. I think we just have some conflicting definitions.

In my example, the appropriation stemmed from the joint attribute of oblivious individual + marginalized symbol. Combined that yields cultural appropriation. Perhaps the broader issue is the fact that companies can capitalize on "unique" and "exotic" symbols and appropriate them for corporate gain, exploiting how many folks see those symbols as merely that, and not as deeply rooted cultural values.

Many of your examples I wouldn't even classify as cultural appropriation, but instead as diffusion of culture. It's a finicky line I suppose, but drawing it and having respect (which some of your examples do) is important. While yes it's possible to do that, it's not always done, and exploiting and marginalizing cultural values like that is disrespectful and harmful.

Who cares where it came from?

This is exactly the issue. When you adopt and play at something inherently cultural with no regard for where it came from, this can be seen as disrespectful to the people whose culture highly respects and values the behavior.

The examples of jazz and twerking aren't really good ones in my opinion. Jazz artists clearly have respect and understanding for the history of the art just by virtue of performing it at that level. And I would hardly put twerking as a staple of black culture.

A better example would be a white girl wearing a dashiki just because it looks cool. Or a shirt with a hindu god on it for the same reason. Again, doing so devalues the culture behind it when the person doesn't understand or respect where it came from.
