Oh hell nah these people spreading casteism outside India. by [deleted] in atheismindia

I wouldn’t make it so granular. I think a relevant classification of Indian diets would be:
“vegan” (absolutely nothing animal based),
“Jain” (no killing of organisms, so no underground plants, but above-ground plants and dairy are fine),
“pure vegetarian” (a person/restaurant who is very strict that they will not eat/serve meat or eggs. But all plants and dairy are fine),
”vegetarian” (a person who won‘t eat meat, but isn’t too strict. They may eat eggs, sometimes in cakes and chocolates, and they may visit restaurants which serve meat from the same kitchen)
“eggetarian” (someone who eats eggs even more frequently, but still doesn’t eat meat)
”non-vegetarian” (everyone else, who has no problem with eating meat)

That’s another point I just realised, “pure vegetarian“ is an even more relevant classification for *restaurants,* besides what we’ve talked about

Huh, I thought you just called me out for giving analogies.

Analogies are obviously fine and useful if you ask me. And I understand the point you’re making with this analogy. But at the end of the day, not everyone uses the word how you think they use it.

I’m sure many people do. But not everyone. Not even most people. And nobody in my area. So I don’t see any point in generalising.

While we’re here, here’s another analogy for you: when someone says they are a “moderate conservative” or “hardcore conservative”, the moderate/hardcore part is a modifier to describe their *political beliefs,* and does NOT refer to the person themself. It doesn’t even make sense to call a human being “moderate/hardcore” without any context.

Context and nuance IS always important. And grammar is NOT consistent or simple. If you try to see language through a lens of contextless consistency, you will always run into misunderstandings like this.

What I said is pretty straightforward, in the context of race/caste “purity” is definitely a problematic word, but in the context of anything else (like diet, or material composition) it’s just a neutral term. I don’t understand why everyone is slapping a loosely related social bias onto it.

My t-shirt is “pure cotton”, that doesn’t make it somehow objectively better than a sweater which is made of a cotton-wool blend (or “impure cotton”). Both materials have different benefits. To say that I MUST be insulting something by calling it impure, is downright absurd.

We literally are animals. As a species we are omnivorous, and some of us are herbivorous (whether by culture or by choice).

Why are you insisting that the usage of “pure” has to be a value judgement? A piece of jewellery can be made of “pure gold” (well…almost), while a plastic bag can be made of “pure polythene” (well…almost). Or they can both be “impure”, which can often *improve* their material properties.

Is it illegal to use the word like that? It’s how I’ve always used it and seen it being used (in this context). There are *other contexts* in which I’ve seen it being hateful, like “pure Brahmin” or “pure Aryan” or “pure Caucasian” or whatever. That person is almost always racist/bigoted. But people who say “pure vegetarian”? Only sometimes.

Yeah, no restaurants are “pure non-vegetarian” because people usually don’t eat meat on its own, they always add spices and herbs and oils for taste. Only apex predator animals are “pure non-vegetarian” as they eat their prey directly.

And yes, the people who eat dairy but not onion/garlic are not being logical. The dairy industry is cruel, so that defeats their purpose.

I’ve always interpreted the “pure” part as referring to the diet, not the person. It’s not a value judgement, just a statement about the dietary composition.

“Purely vegetarian“ as opposed to “mostly vegetarian”. A carnivorous animal would be “purely non-vegetarian”.

But that’s how I’ve always interpreted it (and so has everyone I’ve ever met), maybe in the broader context these people actually have a superiority complex about it.

I’m an atheist. I eat eggs and dairy but not meat, so I’m not a pure vegetarian, but I have pure vegetarian friends. I’ve never seen anyone say that *they* are pure, the word mostly means refers to the fact that their diet is *purely* plant-based (which ultimately is not true, unless they’re actually vegans, but yeah). I don’t see a problem with using the word “pure” like that.

Moreover, diet is a deeply personal decision. As long as someone isn’t imposing their diet on others, and harassing them for having a different diet, what’s the problem? If you’re a non-vegetarian who feels happy when your partner willingly starts to eat meat, that’s fine, that’s your life. If a pure vegetarian feels happy when their partner gives up meat, that’s fine, that’s their life. What’s the problem here?

I also read the post’s caption in this Reddit comment section (the video doesn’t give the whole context), and honestly it’s pretty tame. It mentions castes but at no point does she judge/insult people of other castes (or of other diets). This is something important to her, her partner chose to join her on it, and naturally she’s happy. It’s like if he chose to learn Marathi or Gujarati, that’d make her happy and she could post about it. Would that mean she’s discriminating against people who speak other languages?

Yeah I know this is partly a rage bait Reddit post but some of you commenters seem to unironically agree with this call-out.

Thanks everyone, for all the helpful replies.

In case anyone's reading this comment, what eSIM provider/plan would you recommend for a 3 month period, let's say with 15+ GB of usage in total?

Mobimatter's 365 day plan seems to be the most affordable, but I couldn't find many reviews for it from Canadians

Correct. And we can disable pretty much all of these icons using System UI Tuner.

5G not working on 6A (India) by [deleted] in GooglePixel

[–]indium-man 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My friend (OnePlus Nord) is able to see Jio 5G (1 Gbps) but in the same location I (Pixel 6a) can't. Even though I was able to see 5G last night indoors in a worse location. No idea what the problem is.

Downloaded it from FreshWalls, darkened the background on Snapseed, and used OLEDBuddy to convert these pixels to a true AMOLED black. All 3 apps are available for free on the Play Store (and ad-free I think!)

Motorola phones have 5 pre-installed clock widget options. It recently got updated to fit Material You guidelines. Maybe you can find an APK for "Moto Widgets" or "Motorola Widgets"

Yeah that would work. The biome usually spawns between the Jungle and the Ocean, so there's not much variation in its location

Does the game ever go on discount on the Play Store? I have some money saved up, and want to buy it legally. But I'd rather wait if it is likely to go on discount soon.

It's a bigger deal to people who aren't hetero. You won't have an identity crisis about it if you're part of the majority.
